Job Description We're seeking an experienced Data Modeler to join a dynamic data architecture team supporting critical energy infrastructure and business operations. In this role, you'll be at the forefront of designing enterprise-grade data models that power analytics, operational systems, and strategic business initiatives for one of Texas' most essential utility providers. Your day-to-day will involve collaborating with data architects, DBAs, ETL developers, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable, normalized data models using erwin Data Modeler. You'll work across both Oracle and SQL Server environments, performing forward and reverse engineering, optimizing DDL scripts, and ensuring alignment with data governance standards. You'll report to the Data Architecture leadership team and work closely with cross-functional technology teams. Duties and Responsibilities • Design and develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models using erwin Data Modeler for enterprise systems. • Generate, review, and optimize DDL scripts for database objects including tables, views, indexes, constraints, and partitions. • Perform forward and reverse engineering of data models from existing Oracle and SQL Server databases. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather, analyze, and refine complex business and technical requirements. • Ensure data models adhere to normalization standards (3NF/BCNF), data integrity, and referential integrity principles. • Support dimensional modeling using star and snowflake schemas for data warehousing and analytics initiatives. • Conduct thorough model reviews, impact analysis, and maintain version control using erwin or comparable tools. • Participate actively in data governance initiatives including metadata management, naming standards, and lineage documentation. • Optimize data models for performance, scalability, and maintainability across large-scale enterprise environments. • Assist in database migrations, schema comparisons, and synchronization activities across Dev/QA/Prod environments. • Contribute to the optimization and enhancement of existing data solutions and infrastructure. • Participate in design reviews and collaborate with Data Architecture team members for guidance and best practices. Required Experience/Skills • 3+ years of hands-on data modeling experience in large-scale enterprise environments. • Expert proficiency with erwin Data Modeler (version 9.x or higher preferred) including subject areas, model templates, and DDL generation. • Advanced SQL skills with deep understanding of Oracle (11g/12c/19c/21c) and Microsoft SQL Server (2016+). • Strong command of DDL for creating and modifying tables, indexes, constraints, sequences, synonyms, and materialized views. • Solid grasp of database internals including indexing strategies, partitioning, clustering, and query execution plans. • Experience with data modeling best practices: normalization, denormalization, surrogate keys, and slowly changing dimensions (SCD). • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences. • Self-motivated with strong ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities effectively. • Proven ability to work collaboratively in team environments and build relationships across functions. • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and model comparison/diff tools. Nice-to-Haves • Personal interest in energy, utilities, or critical infrastructure sectors. • Experience with data vault modeling methodologies. • Familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop or MongoDB. • Background working in highly regulated industries with stringent data governance requirements. • Experience in fast-paced, enterprise-scale technology environments similar to Fortune 500 utilities or energy companies. • Knowledge of power systems, energy trading, or utility operations data structures. Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or related technical field preferred. Equivalent professional experience will be considered.
