Role description
Role Overview
Mercor is partnering with a leading frontier AI research lab on an exciting math project. Weβre inviting International Mathematics Olympiad medalists to help push the boundaries of AI reasoning by training large language models to tackle Olympiad-level problems better than the worldβs top competitors.
As part of this engagement, youβll:
β’ Create original Olympiad-level math problems to challenge frontier AI models.
β’ Evaluate and dissect AI-generated solutions, identifying strengths and pinpointing weaknesses.
β’ Provide expert insights and commentary that directly shape the next generation of reasoning systems.
Eligibility is strictly limited to International Mathematics Olympiad Medalists (Gold, Silver, or Bronze). The role is a short-term, high-impact research engagement, with potential for extension based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Design novel, advanced Olympiad-style mathematics problems
β’ Closely review, test, and evaluate AI-generated solutions for correctness and clarity
β’ Identify logical flaws, incomplete reasoning, or insufficiently-rigorous proofs
β’ Provide structured feedback and clear, concise, and correct solutions
β’ Maintain extremely high standards of mathematical precision and problem difficulty
Required Qualifications
The below qualifications are hard requirements for the position. Unfortunately, we will not accept applications from non-medalists.
β’ Medalist (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) or an equivalent international competition within the past 5 years
β’ Expertise across algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory
β’ Ability to clearly articulate complex reasoning in written form
β’ Rigorous attention to detail in verifying solutions
β’ Independent, reliable, and disciplined work style
More About the Opportunity
β’ Remote and flexible β work on your own schedule
β’ Expected commitment: 20 hours/week minimum; up to 40 hours/week available
β’ Approximate project length: ~10 weeks, with extension potential
β’ Rolling start dates; setup typically within 1β2 days of approval
Compensation & Contract Terms
β’ Open to medalists worldwide (English proficiency required)
β’ Independent contractor arrangement through Mercor
β’ Weekly payments via Stripe Connect
Application Process
β’ Submit a short form detailing your Olympiad achievements
β’ Complete a brief interview (20β30 minutes)
β’ Complete a brief mathematical reasoning test (15 minutes)
