Role description
Senior Data Strategist (Contract-to-Hire)
Location: Remote
Start Date: ASAP
Type: 4-6 month contract, could extend or convert
$75/hr-80/hr W2
About the Role
Our client is in the process of separating from another organization and becoming an independent entity. As part of this transition, we are seeking a Senior Data Strategist with strong execution abilities to lead a critical data lift-and-shift migration project from the organization's Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment to a new environment.
This role is essential to maintaining uninterrupted business reporting capabilities. Work will begin immediately to avoid disruptions from operating across two systems for too long.
Why This Role is Critical
The company’s business reporting currently depends on data housed within the other company’s systems. Without this migration completed within the next four months, the organization risks losing real-time reporting visibility. This project precedes a larger Workday implementation and is a key enabler for future data strategy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Partner with the Infrastructure Director as a “two-in-the-box” leader driving the data migration initiative.
• Lead the platform decision-making process (GCP-to-GCP vs. direct migration to Microsoft/Snowflake).
• Evaluate cost implications, data architecture, and technical requirements for the new environment.
• Contribute to the discovery phase—identifying data sets, architecture, and scope—and help shape potential RFP requirements for future vendor engagement.
Hands-On Execution
• Drive and manage the data lift-and-shift migration, coordinating with both internal stakeholders and company resources.
• Collaborate with the company’s future data engineers and external partners to ensure a smooth, secure transition.
• Provide technical oversight and hands-on engineering support throughout the migration process.
Required Qualifications
• GCP/BigQuery Expertise: Proven experience managing and migrating data within the Google Cloud Platform ecosystem.
• Data Migration Strategy & Execution: Demonstrated success leading large-scale cloud data migrations (preferably GCP).
• Microsoft Stack Knowledge: Familiarity with Azure, Fabric, and OneLake—key to our potential long-term data platform strategy.
• Snowflake Experience: Strong understanding of Snowflake, especially in vendor data-sharing environments.
• Strategic Leadership: Capable of balancing high-level architecture decisions with hands-on project execution.
Nice-to-Have Skills
• Ability to pivot quickly if the migration moves directly to Microsoft/Snowflake rather than GCP-to-GCP.
• Experience in consulting or project delivery roles, especially in hybrid strategic/technical engagements.
• Background in the healthcare industry from a data and reporting perspective.
Technology Environment
• Source: Google Cloud Platform (GCP), BigQuery
• Current Reporting Tools: Microsoft Power BI
• Potential Targets: Microsoft Fabric, Azure, OneLake, Snowflake
About You
You’re a senior-level data professional who thrives at the intersection of strategy and execution—comfortable both designing migration strategies and rolling up your sleeves to implement them. You’re a proactive problem solver who can lead cross-functional teams and drive critical business outcomes under tight timelines.
