Role description
OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to support a mission-critical eligibility system operating in an Operations & Maintenance environment. The system is stable but requires a seasoned database professional to ensure continuity, proactively monitor performance, and respond rapidly to incidents, degradation, or outages.
This is a 6-month, part-time contract role, contingent upon contract award, and is well-suited for a senior DBA with experience supporting production systems in government or other regulated environments.
Key Responsibilities
Database Monitoring & Maintenance
Monitor database performance, availability, and overall system health
Perform routine maintenance, indexing, and optimization
Ensure database backup processes are functioning reliably
Troubleshooting & Incident Response
Diagnose and resolve issues impacting database or application performance
Respond quickly to incidents, degradation, or outages
Restore database services, including rollback or backup restoration when required
Disaster Recovery & Reliability
Maintain and test disaster recovery and backup procedures
Ensure data integrity, availability, and continuity
Recommend improvements to database performance and reliability
Documentation
Document database configurations, maintenance routines, and recovery procedures
Create and maintain technical documentation for changes and recommendations
Coordination & Support
Collaborate with MSDE program staff and IT teams
Communicate issues, impacts, and recovery steps clearly
Assist with minor database enhancements or structural adjustments as needed
Qualifications
Bachelorβs degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Database Administration, MIS, or a related field
5+ years of hands-on experience administering production relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
Experience performing backup restoration, disaster recovery, query optimization, and performance tuning in a production environment.
Experience monitoring database health and diagnosing system failures or bottlenecks. Ability to write, review, and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and functions. Experience supporting applications in an O&M environment.
It is preferred that the person has experience with government systems or MDCS-like eligibility platforms.
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $55.00 - $60.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 30 per week
