Database Engineer

Postgres/Cassandra Database Engineer 12+ Months Location: St. Louis, MO Roles and Responsibilities • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively across cross-functional teams. • Forward-thinking approach to infrastructure automation and scripting. • Ability to work with global teams across multiple time zones. • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and seek guidance when needed. • Ability to understand application data requirements and recommend appropriate database solutions. • Responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining EDB Postgres, PGD and AWS RDS database clusters to support large-scale platforms and applications. • Create and manage fully functional database clusters across development, QA, and production environments, with experience in performance tuning. • Review existing configurations and recommend improvements. • Assist with planning and executing Postgres database upgrades and migrations. • Provide day-to-day administrative support and maintenance for Postgres and AWS Aurora databases. • Participate in production support and on-call rotations as needed. • Collaborate with Postgres and cloud vendors and utilize their support channels. • Develop and implement backup strategies, perform upgrades, and apply patches. • Identify inefficiencies and implement optimized solutions. • Design and execute data and database migrations to new hardware or platforms. • Lead best practices and database solution strategies at Mastercard. • Work with management to plan and implement new tools and data services. • Represent Database Engineering in strategic planning and long-term direction. • Support both internal and future cloud-managed Postgres systems, define best practices, and drive automation and innovation. • Collaborate with multiple application teams and developers. • Assist in defining long-term strategic goals for database development in alignment with stakeholders. On Cassandra Skills Set Roles and Responsibilities • Design, deploy, and maintain Cassandra clusters across development, stage, and production environments. • Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery capabilities in Cassandra deployments. • Collaborate with application teams to understand data access patterns and optimize data models accordingly. • Monitor and tune performance of Cassandra clusters, compaction strategies, and read/write throughput. • Develop and implement backup, restore, and archival strategies • Automate operational tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform). • Participate in on-call rotations and provide production support for critical incidents. • Define and enforce best practices for schema design, replication strategies, and consistency levels. • Lead efforts in upgrading Cassandra versions and applying patches with minimal downtime. • Collaborate with security teams to ensure compliance with internal and external data protection standards. • Document architecture, configurations, and operational procedures for knowledge sharing and audit readiness. Required Skills and Experience • Deep understanding of Cassandra internals, including repair mechanisms. • Proficiency in NoSQL and experience with Cassandra drivers (Java, Python, etc.). • Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and DataStax OpsCenter. • Familiarity with multi-region deployments and hybrid cloud architectures. • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills for distributed systems. • Experience with data migration and integration across heterogeneous systems. • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across global teams and time zones. Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. • Experience with complementary NoSQL technologies (e.g., Redis, MongoDB) is a plus. • Exposure to Kubernetes and Cassandra operators (e.g., Cass-Operator) is desirable.
