Role description
We are seeking an experienced and versatile Database Administrator (DBA) to support a global non-profit organization. This is an operational role ideal for a βgeneralistβ who thrives on supporting diverse data systems and development processes.
You will work primarily from a JIRA queue, providing day-to-day production and operational support, managing data movement, and assisting with compliance and reporting. We are looking for a self-starter with a deep technical understanding of SQL mechanics (beyond the UI), including execution plans and performance tuning. A background in development or DevOps is highly beneficial, as this role involves scripting, supporting data pipelines, and some deployment work.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Database Management: Support, monitor, and maintain database systems and integrations in a multi-cloud (primarily Azure) environment.
β’ Operational Support: Serve as a key resource for the data platform team, providing production and operational support by managing a daily JIRA queue.
β’ Administration & Maintenance: Perform routine DBA tasks, including index maintenance, managing reliable backup and recovery processes, and configuring high availability (HA) solutions.
β’ Data Pipeline & DevOps: Build and support the infrastructure required for extraction, load, and transformation (ELT) from various corporate data sources.
β’ Automation: Provide and maintain an automated data pipeline architecture using tools like Airflow, dbt, and Azure Data Factory.
β’ Collaboration: Closely collaborate with stakeholders throughout the organization to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
β’ Security & Compliance: Ensure data is kept separated and secure across multiple environments. Prepare and deliver accurate data outputs on request to support operational and compliance functions.
β’ Monitoring & Optimization: Automate manual processes, optimize data delivery, and monitor system performance, availability, and cost management using tools like Grafana and SQL Diagnostic Manager.
β’ Documentation: Document the data environment using the data catalog and other tools to be available for company use.
Required Qualifications & Skills
β’ Experience: 5-8 years of experience in a Database Administrator, Data Engineer, or equivalent role.
β’ Core SQL Expertise: Deep, foundational knowledge of SQL and SQL Server. Must demonstrate a strong understanding of the mechanics behind query/execution plans.
β’ Azure Cloud: Significant, hands-on experience with the Microsoft Azure platform. This is a must-have.
β’ Azure Data Services: Specific experience with Azure SQL (PaaS) and Azure Data Factory (ADF).
β’ Scripting: Proficiency in Python (for data quality and automation) and PowerShell.
β’ Modern Data Stack: Hands-on experience with Airflow and dbt.
β’ Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work independently as a self-starter.
Preferred Qualifications
β’ Experience in a multinational or similarly complex data environment.
β’ Familiarity with all forms of MS Azure SQL, including high availability configurations, linked servers, and elastic pools.
β’ Knowledge of other data technologies such as Snowflake, Postgres, Mongo, FiveTran, or MarkLogic.
β’ Experience using monitoring tools like Grafana or SQL Diagnostic Manager.
Location Requirements
This is a fully remote position. Candidates must reside in one of the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, or Virginia.
