Role description
Job Specification – DevOps Engineer (AWS) | UK Government Programme
Overview
We are supporting a UK government-backed programme delivering a new law enforcement data service, replacing a legacy mainframe platform with a modern, cloud-native architecture.
This programme is already in delivery and requires a significant number of DevOps Engineers to accelerate build and deployment activity, with a target completion around mid-year.
Role Summary
As a DevOps Engineer, you will play a key role in building and automating cloud-native platforms within a secure government environment.
This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on:
• Software engineering principles
• Automation
• Scalable AWS infrastructure
Key Responsibilities
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment
• Develop and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform
• Deploy and manage applications using containerisation (Docker) and Kubernetes
• Contribute to software engineering activities across the platform (not pure ops)
• Work within cross-functional teams delivering a modern data platform
• Support the migration from a legacy mainframe system to a cloud-native solution
Technology Environment
• Cloud: AWS (essential)
• Languages / Stack: Node.js, React
• Database: PostgreSQL
• DevOps Tooling:
• Terraform (or similar IaC tools)
• CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, etc.)
• Docker & Kubernetes
Required Experience
• Strong experience as a DevOps / Platform / Cloud Engineer
• Proven experience working in AWS environments (essential)
• Hands-on experience with:
• CI/CD pipeline development
• Infrastructure as Code
• Containerisation & orchestration
• Background in software engineering (not purely operational DevOps)
• Experience working on secure or regulated programmes (highly desirable)
Security Clearance
• SC Clearance – must be currently held (Home Office SC highly preferred)
• NPPV Level 3 – not required upfront, but must be willing to undergo
Working Model
• Location: UK-based (onshore only)
• Working Pattern: Home-based
• Engagement: Contract
• IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Project Context
• Programme is live and in delivery
• Objective is to decommission a legacy mainframe system
• Build a scalable, extensible data service for UK policing
• High priority hiring – contractors required ASAP
