Role description
Position Summary:
The Energy Market Analyst is a two month contract with one of Calculated Hire's client's. The position is responsible for evaluating and interpreting energy markets, financial and physical transactions, and economic models to support strategic decisions that improve our client's overall system cost. This role focuses on providing analytical support to optimize fuel supply strategies and enhance the value of coal, gas, and power procurement decisions.
The analyst will contribute to the development and refinement of decision-support models and tools, with the goal of increasing economic value and operational efficiency across our client's energy portfolio. The role also supports senior analysts and leadership in developing market strategies, evaluating deal structures, and presenting findings to internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
β’ Analyze and interpret energy market data, including fuel and power transactions, to identify value optimization opportunities.
β’ Assist in the development and application of decision models and analytical tools to support trading, planning, and procurement strategies.
β’ Support the valuation of physical and financial energy transactions (coal, gas, power), and provide recommendations to maximize economic benefits.
β’ Collaborate with internal groups including Resource Planning & Strategy, Power Operations, Transmission & Power Supply, Distributed Energy Resources, and Financial Services to integrate cross-functional data and insights.
β’ Prepare and present analyses to inform fuel supply decisions, support trading strategies, and advise senior management.
β’ Participate in the development of portfolio strategies by evaluating risks, market trends, and commodity fundamentals.
β’ Contribute to ongoing improvement of tools, methodologies, and reporting to enhance decision-making capabilities.
β’ Engage in continuous learning of our client's power system, customer landscape, and strategic goalsβespecially in areas such as customer-owned generation, deal structuring, and evolving market dynamics.
β’ Develop professional skills including data visualization, written and verbal communication, and proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and other analytical platforms.
Qualifications:
β’ Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Business, or a related field; advanced degree preferred but not required.
β’ 1β3 years of experience in energy markets, utility analytics, trading support, or similar analytical roles (internship experience may be considered).
β’ Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
β’ Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis tools; familiarity with programming or modeling software (e.g., Python, R, VBA, MATLAB) is a plus.
β’ Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex topics to non-technical stakeholders.
β’ Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across multiple departments in a matrixed organization.
