Purpose
The Senior HP Non-Stop Developer plays a pivotal role in the design, development, and ongoing enhancement of mission-critical applications running on HPE Non-Stop systems. This position supports the 24/7 operational demands of Amtrak s train dispatching infrastructure, ensuring that software solutions meet the high-availability and fault-tolerance requirements.
By developing and maintaining robust, scalable code for real-time train control systems, the Senior Developer directly contributes to the safe, efficient, and timely movement of trains across the national network. This role is essential to sustaining the reliability and performance of the core dispatching applications that underpin Amtrak s operational continuity.
The Senior HP Non-Stop Developer works on major projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancement. Also involved in complex support issues. Works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with business and IT strategies and are in compliance with the organization s architectural standards. Will be involved in the full systems life cycle and therefore is responsible for designing, coding, testing, implementing and supporting application software that is delivered on time and within budget. Responsibilities beyond development of software may include participation in component and data architecture design, technology planning, product evaluation, advanced testing processes and buy vs. build recommendations.
Essential Functions
Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
β’ Design, develop, and maintain fault-tolerant applications on HPE NonStop systems using TAL, C, or C++
β’ Build and support mission-critical software for real-time train control, dispatching, and crew scheduling
β’ Develop and optimize database solutions using NonStop SQL/MX and SQL/MP
β’ Integrate applications with Enscribe file systems and Pathway server classes
β’ Analyze system performance and implement improvements to enhance throughput and responsiveness
β’ Troubleshoot and resolve production issues to ensure continuous system availability
β’ Participate in structured change management, including software upgrades and patch deployments
β’ Create and maintain technical documentation aligned with regulatory and operational standards
β’ Implement secure coding practices and support audit-readiness for transportation compliance
β’ Estimate development tasks, manage dependencies, and contribute to release planning
β’ Collaborate with QA, operations, and infrastructure teams to deliver scalable, reliable solutions
β’ Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders across departments
β’ Support modernization efforts through hybrid integration models (e.g., REST APIs, NSHTTP, iTP WebServer)

Requirements
β’ Bachelor s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field (required)
β’ Minimum 7 years of hands-on development experience on HPE NonStop (Tandem) platforms
β’ Expertise in application development on HPE NonStop systems using TAL, C, or C++ to build and maintain high-performance, fault-tolerant solutions in 24/7 environments
β’ Experience in developing mission-critical applications for regulated or service-oriented industries with real-time requirements
β’ Expertise in NonStop SQL/MX and SQL/MP databases, including schema design, query optimization, and ANSI-compliant SQL development
β’ Familiarity with Enscribe file structures and integration with Pathway server-based applications
β’ Proficiency in system performance analysis, with the ability to identify bottlenecks and improve transaction throughput and responsiveness
β’ Expertise in incident response and troubleshooting, ensuring rapid resolution of production issues to maintain uptime and continuity
β’ Familiarity with structured change management practices, including software release planning, patch deployment, and rollback strategies
β’ Proficiency in creating and maintaining technical documentation, ensuring alignment with internal development standards and regulatory compliance
β’ Expertise in secure development practices, with awareness of audit, data protection, and industry-specific security requirements
β’ Familiarity with release management workflows, including accurate task estimation, dependency tracking, and resource allocation
