Role description
Job Title: IBM i Modernization Specialist
Location: Juneau, Alaska – Remote
Role Summary
Seeking a very senior IBM i modernization specialist with deep, hands-on experience in long-running LANSA-based enterprise applications.. This role requires architect-level understanding of how LANSA, RPG, DB2 for i, and JDE-style workloads evolved over decades and how to safely disentangle, refactor, or retire them as part of cloud and AI transformation initiatives. This is not a pure developer role.
This role requires someone who understands how LANSA solved problems 20 years ago — and how to safely unwind it today without breaking the business.
Must-Have Experience (Non-Negotiable)
15+ years of hands-on experience in IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) enterprise environments
Deep hands-on LANSA experience, including:
RDML-based LANSA codebases, including newer variants (e.g., RDMLX)
LANSA runtime and object model
5250, web-enabled, and API-style LANSA apps
Strong command of DB2 for i, including schema design, physical/logical files, and performance considerations
Demonstrated ability to analyze, trace, and explain complex, poorly documented legacy code
Experience supporting or modernizing business-critical systems order management, pricing, inventory, customer-facing workflows)
Proven track record in LANSA and IBM i modernization, including retain / refactor / rewrite decisions
Ability to identify and mitigate tight coupling between LANSA, IBM i objects, and downstream systems
Modernization & Architecture Requirements
·Direct experience with LANSA modernization or migration, including:
Retain vs refactor vs rewrite decisions
Re-platforming off proprietary runtimes
Breaking tight coupling to IBM i objects
Ability to articulate modernization trade-offs to technical and business stakeholders
Experience defining functional disentanglement strategies before infrastructure moves
Comfortable advising on what not to migrate
Nice-to-Have (Strong Differentiators)
·Exposure to JDE (JD Edwards) integrations or customizations
·Experience modernizing IBM i workloads toward AWS, Azure, or hybrid
·Understanding of API enablement and service boundaries
·Prior consulting or advisory experience with enterprise clients
