Role description
Role Title: IIoT Backend Platform Engineer Location: Dallas, TX Mandatory Skills • IIoT Platform (On-Prem Kubernetes, MQTT, TimescaleDB, Schema Registry) Role Description Develop the backend of Nexus — build resilient microservices that communicate via MQTT, enforce data contracts through Forge, and deliver high-throughput, reliable ingest into TimescaleDB running on on-prem Kubernetes. Drive service SLIs/SLOs, security, and multi-tenant operations. Collaborate with OT teams (often via Ignition) while maintaining focus on backend reliability and developer experience. Optional support for secure hybrid deployment to AWS for backup and analytics Required Qualifications • 5+ years building production backend services in Go, Java, JavaScript, C, or Python. • Deep MQTT expertise (EMQX/HiveMQ/Mosquitto): QoS 0/1, retained messages, shared subscriptions, sessions, ACLs, TLS/mTLS. • Strong on-prem Kubernetes or Docker experience: Helm, Compose, observability, autoscaling, GitOps, secure multi-tenant operations. • Time Series Database or historian experience: hypertables, compression, retention, continuous aggregates, performance tuning, backup/restore. • Experience with schema registry using JSON Schema and CI-enforced compatibility. • CI/CD expertise (GitHub Actions or equivalent): build/test automation, canary/blue-green deployments, artifact management, and automated rollbacks. • Solid understanding of security: PKI, certificates, least privilege, network segmentation, Vault/KMS, and audit logging. Nice to Have • Experience with Ignition (Transmission/Engine), OPC UA/Modbus/EtherNet/IP. • Familiarity with Kafka/Pulsar and MQTT bridges; CDC/outbox patterns. • IaC (Terraform/Ansible), Rancher/OpenShift, or edge deployments (K3s). • Service Mesh (Istio/Linkerd) for mTLS and traffic policies.
