Journey level Engineer, Career Location: Oakland, CA Onsite Flexibility: Hybrid — coworkers are required to be in the office on two scheduled days currently; this may increase in the future. Job Summary This position is represented by the Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining. The role is for a journey-level engineer who has mastered Associate engineer skills and duties, and is responsible for leading the engineering and design of more complex projects. The journey engineer exercises independent judgment in applying engineering principles and works with minimal supervision. Collaboration with engineers, project managers, construction personnel, and other business partners to assess project needs is essential. Additional responsibilities include developing technical studies and reports, providing guidance to contractors and outside vendors, and traveling to/from project-related functions approximately 20% of the time. This hybrid position requires working from a remote office and an assigned work location within the service territory, based on business needs. Key Responsibilities • Resolve problems of moderate scope using standard solutions • Independently plan work under general direction; progress reviewed periodically for technical accuracy • Perform functions of Associate level Engineer as needed • Provide technical expertise, conduct engineering analyses, studies, and develop conceptual designs • Present findings to internal teams, contractors, and vendors • Conduct walkdowns and design review meetings • Prepare technical documents including design criteria, scope documents, specifications, and reports • Develop, evaluate, and recommend alternative project proposals • Solicit, prepare, and evaluate contracts/proposals from engineering consultants • Review consultant contracts for technical compliance • Interpret and apply applicable codes and regulations • Participate in developing restoration plans and assist in root cause analysis • Approve reports, new drawings, and revisions to existing drawings • Respond promptly to facility failures in emergencies • Represent the client to government bodies for assigned projects Required Skills • Past transmission experience • Demonstrates curiosity and project management skills Preferred Skills • Electrical transmission line engineering for 115kV–500kV • Strong familiarity with GO 95, NESC, and transmission line standards and construction practices • Strong familiarity with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, etc. • Skills in project management Education Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited U.S. curriculum or equivalent from outside the U.S. (required) Required Experience • 3 years of cumulative experience in engineering and design Work Environment / Physical Requirements • Hybrid role: required to be in the office on two scheduled days; frequency may increase in the future • Travel to/from project-related functions approximately 20% of the time • Coworkers are required to provide their own required PPE for onsite field work: hard hat, boots, gloves, safety glasses, vest, and FR gear • With prior manager approval, mileage and expenses associated with site visits may be submitted for reimbursement Benefits • Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance Plans • 401k Retirement Fund Important Notes • No relocation assistance will be provided; non-local candidates must already be committed to or planning to relocate to the Bay Area and must be able to fulfill the hybrid requirement from the start of the assignment. • Strong probability of FTE conversion following the contract period.
