Role description
Location: Primarily remote, with one onsite visit to Manchester per month
Contract Type: 12-Month Fixed Term Contract (FTC), with a view to go permanent

We are seeking a Lead DevOps Engineer well-versed with Azure, with experience leading DevOps teams, as well as previous experience working within centralised government capacities. Role Overview
As a Lead, youβre expected to operate at both a technical leadership level and a hands-on architecture/automation level. You will work within an Agile team, focusing on scalable, secure, and resilient cloud architectures that support modern digital services.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Youβll define and enforce deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions by building multi-stage pipelines (build, test, security scan, deploy), implementing blue/green or canary deployments and standardizing pipelines across teams.
β’ Full automation of infrastructure using Terraform and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) to build reusable modules and templates to enforce consistency across environments.
β’ Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous integration and delivery
β’ Automate system deployments, configuration, and monitoring for reliability and performance
β’ Manage and optimise containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes (standardising Docker usage).
β’ Collaborate with developers, security engineers, and architects to deliver high-quality solutions
β’ For Senior Engineers: Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and contribute to solution design decisions
Skills & Experience Required
β’ Active SC clearance preferred, but SC Eligibility accepted (applications without clearance cannot be considered)
β’ Proven experience with Azure, AWS core services (EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, Lambda, ECS/EKS)
β’ Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
β’ Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)
β’ Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
β’ Scripting ability with Python or Bash
β’ Version control experience (Git)
