Role description
About The Role
This position requires the successful candidate to work on a W2 directly with FDM. We cannot accept C2C, 1099 or employment sponsorship (e.g. H1-B) for this position.
FDM is a global business and technology consultancy delivering client and industry driven solutions through our 5 core specialist Practices; Software Engineering, Data & Analytics, IT Operations, Change & Transformation, and Risk, Regulation & Compliance.
FDM is seeking a Cloud Engineer located in New York to support a project in the Financial Services sector. Involvement in this project is anticipated to last initially 12 but may be extended.
This role will be hybrid with requirements to be in office 3 days per week.
About You
We are looking for a mid-level Cloud Engineer (Azure) to help build, enhance, and support a cloud-centric platform running in Microsoft Azure. The focus is on delivering secure, scalable infrastructure, enabling fast, efficient deployments, and reducing operational complexity by minimizing reliance on on-prem infrastructure.
This contract role will work closely with engineering and support teams to ensure the environment can scale up/down seamlessly, remain secure and audit-ready, and support rapid releases with minimal disruption.
Key Responsibilities (What you’ll do)
Azure Infrastructure & Operations
• Build and operate Azure infrastructure that supports flexibility and scalability, including capacity scaling aligned to business demand.
• Maintain cloud environments to reduce internal IT burden and eliminate unnecessary infrastructure complexity.
• Deliver reliability improvements (availability, performance, monitoring, alerting) to support enterprise usage patterns.
Automation, Deployment & Change
• Implement Infrastructure-as-Code to standardize and accelerate environment provisioning and changes (e.g., Terraform/Bicep/ARM).
• Improve and support CI/CD pipelines to enable faster implementations and enhancements with minimal disruption.
• Drive automation for repeatable operations (patching, upgrades, scaling, incident response runbooks).
Security & Compliance
• Implement Azure security controls and guardrails for environments hosted in Azure secure, audited datacenters (identity, network segmentation, encryption, key management, logging).
• Support audit and compliance requirements through evidence capture, policy enforcement, and secure configuration baselines.
Support & Stakeholder Collaboration
• Act as a technical escalation point for cloud platform issues, partnering across infrastructure and application support where needed (single-provider style operating model).
• Collaborate with engineering teams to diagnose bottlenecks, improve resilience, and enable rapid delivery.
Required Skills & Experience (Mid-Level)
Core Technical Skills
• 3–7 years’ experience in cloud engineering / SRE / DevOps with strong hands-on Microsoft Azure exposure.
• Practical experience operating production environments with:
• Networking: VNets, subnets, NSGs, routing, private endpoints
• Compute: VMSS / App Services / AKS (any combination)
• Storage: Azure Storage, backups, DR patterns
• Security: Azure AD (Entra), RBAC, Key Vault, logging/monitoring
• Strong Infrastructure-as-Code experience (Terraform or Bicep/ARM preferred).
• Experience improving operational reliability: monitoring, alerting, incident response, postmortems.
Delivery & Ways of Working
• Proven ability to deliver changes in a controlled way to support fast implementations and platform enhancements.
• Comfortable working in a contract setting: independent delivery, clear status updates, strong documentation habits.
