Role description

Job Summary
The Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) is a civilian police force that protects the UK's Defence community, capabilities and assets. Our Force consists of armed officers, specialist policing roles and professional civilian staff who work seamlessly with the Ministry of Defence, US Visiting Forces, and other policing and security partners. With stations across the United Kingdom, our presence extends from nuclear facilities to military sites and government buildings. Unlike territorial police forces, our jurisdiction and expertise are focused on protecting the critical infrastructure that underpins national security. Our officers and civil servants bring diverse experience and skills to the unique challenges of Defence policing.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project for the Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) in collaboration with the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) and University College London (UCL). We are seeking a motivated and capable Health Analyst to undertake a funded PhD research project focused on developing a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) to inform and optimise overtime decision-making within the MDP. This post offers the opportunity to join the MDP as a member of staff whilst undertaking the fully funded PhD programme. This project presents the unique prospect of conducting impactful research at the intersection of operational policing, occupational health, physiology, and neuroscience.
Shift-working is ubiquitous to the MDP and enables these services to be carried out 24/7 365 days per year. The INM work closely with the MDP on projects relating to health, wellbeing, and fitness. The INM is the Naval Service’s Centre of Excellence for occupational health advice, information, training and research. It brings together scientists and medical professionals to improve the health of the UK Armed Forces and wider Defence.
The MDP and INM have partnered with UCL to deliver this PhD programme. UCL provide world-class expertise in occupational health, sleep science, neuroscience, and systems modelling and the PhD will be under the supervision of Dr Flaminia Ronca from the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) under the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Professor Vincent Walsh from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (ICN) under the Faculty of Brain Sciences.
The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate a significant portion of their time either on-site at University College London or at MDP Headquarters in Wyton.
Interviews will be held at UCL: The ISEH, First Floor, 170 Tottenham Court Road. W1T 7HA

Should you apply for this role and be found to require sponsorship, your application will be rejected and any provisional offer of employment withdrawn.

These declarations will be discussed with successful candidates following the interview process and before a formal offer of employment is made, as some outside interests may not be compatible with MOD civilian roles. The Ministry of Defence adopts a zero-tolerance approach to unacceptable behaviours, which includes bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination, and victimisation. This will also apply if you resign or otherwise leave a role but, because of an adverse decision, would have been dismissed for gross misconduct had you continued in that employment. Pre-employment checks will be carried out.
Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
