Job Description:
Senior POS Engineer / POS Architecture Consultant
Location: Canton, Massachusetts (Partial Remote)
Employment Type: Contract
Role Overview
A senior, hands-on POS Engineer and Architecture Consultant is sought to design, evaluate, and future-proof next-generation POS hardware and edge computing architecture for a large-scale Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) environment. This is a strategy-meets-engineering position focused on architecture decisions, tradeoff analysis, and long-term scalability. The role involves working onsite in a lab environment to validate architectural options and deliver actionable recommendations that will shape store technology for the next 5–10 years.
Key Responsibilities
• Evaluate current POS hardware platforms, deployment models, and OS options against longevity and performance requirements.
• Assess architectural patterns that reduce dependency on POS terminal OS end-of-support (EOS) and shift logic to store-level edge compute.
• Ensure architectures support seamless offline operation in high-volume store environments.
• Provide guidance on OS imaging and lifecycle strategy, including Windows LTSC and Linux workloads.
• Assess infrastructure readiness for future workloads such as AI-assisted applications and real-time analytics.
• Design architectures that allow for software growth without requiring frequent hardware refreshes.
• Deliver clear architecture recommendations, diagrams, and design artifacts to technical and executive stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with enterprise POS systems in a QSR or high-volume retail setting.
• 3+ years of experience designing or operating edge computing in large-scale, distributed environments.
• 5+ years of experience with enterprise POS hardware from vendors such as NCR, Oracle MICROS, or HP.
• Experience with OS imaging, lifecycle management, and hands-on work with Windows LTSC and Linux for edge workloads.
• At least 1 year of experience with Oracle MICROS Symphony or Oracle RES.
• Understanding of transactions, payments, POS peripherals, and offline network behavior.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with headless or API-first POS and commerce architectures.
• Familiarity with containerized workloads at the edge.
• Knowledge of PCI boundary design and payment isolation.
• Experience producing architecture documentation for both technical and executive audiences.
• Experience with restaurant technology and working with both software and edge computing in a QSR environment.
