Role description
HBGI Power BI Associate - in support of California Behavioral Health
Fractional contracting opportunity – 6 month contract working for approximately 80 hours per month
Must be U.S.-based and authorized to work as an independent contractor.
$62.50 per hour (dependent on experience)
The Healthy Brains Global Initiative (HBGI) (www.hbgi.org) transforms and builds high-performing mental health services and systems that maximize outcomes for individuals and their communities.
We are currently working with behavioral health services in California to strengthen accountability and user outcomes; working with them to develop robust and transparent performance management and unlock change in service delivery. Part of this process involves co-creating new tools and data processes to drive a step change in performance - more and better outcomes for individuals accessing programs or at risk of poor mental health. We are looking for a fractional Power BI specialist to join our team for the next 6 months to support us in doing this.
This role is suited to early career professionals. Candidates must have least a Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of relevant (full-time) post-university professional experience.
Essential Functions:
Monthly Performance Review Preparation
• Assist with the preparation of monthly performance packs for monthly program reviews. This includes, data cleaning, entry into excel dashboards, and quality checks for accuracy.
• Engage with the team to ensure that the data analysis is of maximum benefit to the project.
Power BI Development
• Create interactive dashboards, visualizations, and reports tailored to stakeholder needs.
• Optimize Power BI models for performance, scalability, and communication across levels of leadership.
Excel Development
• Build automated Excel tools and templates for data entry, analysis, visualizations and reporting. These will feed into the above dashboards and / or monthly performance reviews.
• Develop easy-to-use interfaces for non-technical staff to manage and analyze data.
• Create dynamic reporting mechanisms using Power Query and VBA when needed.
Technical Assistance & Capacity Building
• Provide one-on-one and group training for county partners and internal HBGI team on how to use databases, dashboards, and reporting tools.
• Develop user guides, standard operating procedures, and technical documentation.
• Conduct quality assurance checks and troubleshoot data issues, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and usability of reporting tools.
• Offer troubleshooting and ongoing technical support for data systems.
How to apply
Please send: a) an up-to-date resume (no more than two pages), explaining any gaps, and; b) a covering letter (no more than two pages) which addresses the following:
· Who are you? (Have fun with this!) (non-resume answer)
· How does your past experience set you up for success in this role?
· Examples of past Power BI dashboards created and any references related to those dashboards
· 2x referees we could contact about your application
Given the very high volume of applications, we greatly regret that we cannot provide individual feedback and will only follow-up with short-listed candidates. Please ensure you have provided all the detail requested for us to consider your application. Applications that are written with AI or that cut and paste sections on mental health in California from Google will not be considered. We request please personal responses.
Please email your application to opportunities@hbgi.org with Power BI Associate (California) in the subject line. The closing date is 18th November September 2025 at 23.59 Pacific Standard Time.
