Query Optimization Specialist

BEC 3 – Technical Analyst (Contract) Charlotte, NC Job Description We are seeking a highly technical Query Optimization Specialist to analyze, refactor, and optimize inefficient SQL queries impacting large-scale Market Risk and Counterparty Risk databases. This role focuses on improving database performance by rewriting long-running queries, re-engineering data logic, and converting recurring query workloads into efficient dashboards or automated solutions. The ideal candidate is an autonomous problem solver with strong SQL fundamentals, experience diagnosing performance bottlenecks, and the ability to propose and implement faster, more scalable solutions without daily oversight. Key Responsibilities • Analyze long-running and inefficient SQL queries affecting enterprise databases • Understand underlying data sources, joins, transformations, and output logic • Rewrite and optimize complex SQL queries for performance and efficiency • Refactor logic to reduce unnecessary database load and redundant data pulls • Use Python where appropriate to improve data processing or query execution • Convert frequently run queries into dashboards (Tableau or Power BI) when beneficial • Proactively communicate findings, risks, and optimization recommendations • Work independently to surface issues and solutions without waiting for direction Required Skills & Experience • Strong SQL expertise, including performance tuning and query optimization • Ability to analyze and refactor complex, long-running queries • Solid understanding of relational databases and data modeling concepts • Experience identifying performance bottlenecks in large datasets • Proficiency in Python for data analysis or query optimization (preferred) • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills • Ability to work autonomously and manage work without daily supervision
