Role description
Data Engineer (Refinery Operations) β Remote | Contract Through End of 2026
We are seeking a detail-driven Data Engineer with refinery operations experience to support instrumentation mapping, asset tracking, and real-time data integration initiatives for a large industrial project. This is a fully remote W2 contract role with two openings, expected to run through the end of 2026.
This position focuses heavily on data contextualization, extracting instrumentation and equipment information from refinery Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and mapping those assets into structured data models within the PI Asset Framework. The work is highly detail-oriented and requires familiarity with refinery systems and terminology.
If you have experience working with refinery documentation and enjoy transforming complex engineering drawings into structured data systems, this role offers an opportunity to contribute to a large-scale digital infrastructure initiative.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Extract, interpret, and organize data from refinery P&IDs and equipment data sheets.
β’ Identify and catalog refinery equipment including pumps, compressors, exchangers, reactors, columns, furnaces, and instrumentation.
β’ Associate instrumentation with process equipment and map instruments to corresponding PI Asset Framework attributes.
β’ Add mapped PI tags to the deployed PI Asset Framework and support calculation deployment.
β’ Navigate and extract instrumentation data from complex refinery systems such as crude units, hydrotreaters, reformers, FCC units, hydrocrackers, cokers, sulfur plants, and utilities.
β’ Perform data validation and quality checks to ensure tag numbers, equipment identifiers, and signal paths match refinery documentation.
β’ Work closely with engineering and subject matter experts to resolve discrepancies and confirm data associations.
β’ Support standardization of naming conventions, tag structures, and engineering documentation practices.
β’ Track and report completion progress of assigned datasets.
Required Qualifications
β’ Direct experience working with refinery P&IDs, equipment lists, and process documentation.
β’ Familiarity with PI Systems, including PI tags, PI Asset Framework (PIAF), hierarchies, and templates.
β’ Strong understanding of refinery process equipment and instrumentation, including transmitters, analyzers, control valves, switches, and safety systems.
β’ Advanced proficiency with Excel and engineering data management tools.
β’ High attention to detail and the ability to navigate complex technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
β’ Bachelorβs degree in engineering or a technical discipline (or extensive refinery operations experience).
β’ Experience working in an engineering or technical role within a refinery environment.
β’ 1β2 years of experience configuring PI Asset Framework.
Role Details
β’ Employment Type: W2 Contract
β’ Duration: Contract through December 2026
β’ Location: 100% Remote (U.S. only)
β’ Schedule: Monday β Friday, 40 hours per week
β’ Openings: 2 positions
β’ Start Date: ASAP
β’ Interview Process: 1β2 virtual interviews
If you have refinery domain knowledge and experience working with PI systems and P&IDs, weβd love to connect. Apply or message directly to learn more about this opportunity.
