Role description
Job Category: Information Technology
Job Type: Contract
Job Location: New York
ROLE SUMMARY
The Reporting Data Analyst is a data-focused role requiring deep hands-on experience with insurance data, source systems, and enterprise data warehouse (DWH) structures. This position partners with business and IT teams across the Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance domain to define, validate, and deliver reporting and data extracts grounded in a strong understanding of how insurance data is captured in source applications and how it flows into the data warehouse.
High-level knowledge of insurance concepts (e.g., policy lifecycle) alone is insufficient. The successful candidate must clearly articulate data lineage, transformations, and business rules as data moves through systems such as Guidewire and into the DWH for policies, claims, billing, and financials.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a data and domain SME for P&C insurance subject areas, including policy, claims, billing, and financial data.
Work closely with business stakeholders to gather, clarify, and validate reporting and extract requirements with a strong focus on data accuracy and traceability.
Translate insurance business requirements into detailed data logic, metrics, and dimensional definitions grounded in source system behavior.
Demonstrate deep understanding of how source applications (e.g., Guidewire Policy, Billing, and Claims) generate, store, and pass data into the enterprise data warehouse.
Analyze and explain end-to-end data flows, including source tables, transformations, and downstream DWH structures.
Create, validate, and optimize SQL queries, views, and semantic-layer objects against the enterprise DWH.
Review and certify reports for reconciliation, completeness, and consistency between source systems and warehouse data.
Investigate and resolve data discrepancies by tracing issues back to source systems and ETL processes.
Document data definitions, lineage, business rules, and reporting assumptions in a clear and consumable manner.
Support UAT activities and partner with data engineering teams on defect resolution and enhancements.
Educate business users on correct interpretation of insurance data and reporting outputs.
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
8+ years of hands-on experience as an IT Reporting or Data Analyst.
4+ years of experience working with data in the Property & Casualty insurance industry; reinsurance experience is a plus.
Demonstrated experience working with insurance source systems, particularly Guidewire (Policy, Billing, Claims); experience with Genius and SAP is beneficial.
Strong understanding of source-to-target data flows, data lineage, and enterprise data warehouse architectures.
3+ years of hands-on experience with Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), Microsoft Power BI, or similar BI tools.
Advanced SQL skills with experience querying large-scale enterprise data warehouses.
Solid understanding of dimensional modeling, facts and dimensions, and enterprise reporting concepts.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Strong self-starter with the ability to work independently in complex, data-driven environments.
Comfortable navigating ambiguity and asking the right questions to uncover data nuances.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data concepts to business and technical audiences.
Proven experience working directly with senior business stakeholders and cross-functional IT teams.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelorβs degree in Computer Science, MIS, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
