Role description
Position: Data Engineer (AWS | Python | SQL | Database Support)
Location: Remote/Plano, TX (Hybrid)
Duration: 06 Months (Possible extensions)
Job Description:
We are hiring a Data Engineer to join a horizontal data systems support team responsible for managing and supporting enterprise-wide databases. This role combines data engineering, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps support, with a strong focus on AWS-hosted databases, automation, and infrastructure as code.
The ideal candidate will be hands-on with Python, SQL, and AWS, comfortable troubleshooting production systems, and willing to participate in an on-call rotation to ensure database reliability and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
• Support and maintain production Postgres, MySQL, and SQL Server databases hosted on AWS RDS
• Develop and automate solutions using Python scripting and SQL queries
• Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries for performance improvements
• Implement Infrastructure as Code using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation
• Provide database reliability, monitoring, and operational support
• Respond to incidents, alerts, and developer requests during on-call rotations
• Assist engineering teams with query optimization, schema design, and database best practices
• Participate in deployments and release support activities
• Continuously improve system stability through automation and proactive monitoring
Required Skills:
• Experience in Data Engineering or Database Engineering
• Strong hands-on experience with:
• Python (scripting, data handling, pandas basics)
• SQL (joins, aggregations, optimization)
• AWS (especially RDS)
• Experience working with Postgres and/or SQL Server
• Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation or similar)
• Experience supporting production environments
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Nice to Have:
• DevOps or SRE exposure
• Experience supporting multiple application teams
• Enterprise or financial services environment experience
On-Call Expectations
• Weekly rotation via PagerDuty
• Monitor alerts and Slack channels
• Handle incident response and database issues
• Participate in evening deployments (typically Thursdays)
• Average ~1 page per week during rotation
• Reduced planned workload during on-call weeks
