Contract Job Opportunity: Senior Data Engineer (SC Cleared)
Client: Government Agency – Defence Sector
Location: Fully Remote (UK-based)
Duration: Initial 6 months (with likely extensions – 2–3 year programme)
Start Date: ASAP to 1 Month Notice
Clearance: SC Cleared (or eligible)
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Overview:
We’re currently supporting a long-term data programme with a government agency operating within the defence sector. This programme focuses on transforming how critical geospatial and environmental data is processed and consumed across multiple systems.
As a Senior Data Engineer, you’ll work alongside a collaborative agile team to design, develop, and deploy modern, scalable data pipelines and services. You’ll work with large, complex datasets—often geospatial in nature—and contribute to shaping long-term architecture and delivery standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design, build, test, and deploy robust production-grade data pipelines
• Write high-quality Python code within a serverless architecture
• Work with AWS cloud services and CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment
• Engage with stakeholders to understand data consumption needs
• Support broader technology teams with data and code challenges
• Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team culture through coaching and pair programming
Essential Experience:
• Strong programming ability in Python (for application-level development, not scripting)
• Proven experience designing and implementing data ingest and processing capabilities
• Production experience with AWS (e.g. Lambda, S3, Step Functions, etc.)
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices including automated testing, linting, and static analysis
Desirable Experience:
• Experience processing geospatial, or environmental datasets
• Implementation of effective monitoring and logging in data pipelines
• Exposure to mentoring or coaching within engineering teams
Other Requirements:
• Must be a British, Irish, EEA or Commonwealth citizen
• Must have resided in the UK for at least 5 years (for SC clearance eligibility)
• SC clearance is required for the role (candidates without current SC may be considered if eligible; BPSS required to start)
• Role is Inside IR35 – evidence may be requested during the contract in line with policy
If you're an experienced Data Engineer looking to work on high-impact government projects with modern technologies in a supportive remote team, we’d love to hear from you.
