Our client is a clean tech start-up who are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the creation of a secure, scalable, and future-proof data platform.
This is a strategic, part-time role (2 days per week) that combines hands-on technical delivery with leadership responsibilities. You'll build the foundations of the company's data systems while also recruiting and mentoring a junior data engineer to take on day-to-day operations under your guidance.
You'll be at the heart of how data is captured, processed, and utilised, working closely with the R&D team to enable meaningful analysis and insights. By embedding security, governance, and best practices from the outset, you'll ensure the data platform grows seamlessly alongside the business.
What you'll do
β’ Design, implement, and manage a scalable and secure data platform from scratch.
β’ Select and configure the right tools, services, and infrastructure for data storage, integration, and processing.
β’ Build and maintain pipelines to ingest, clean, and transform data from multiple sources.
β’ Collaborate with R&D teams to provide structured datasets that support research and analysis.
β’ Drive data quality, consistency, and governance through monitoring and validation processes.
β’ Develop the foundations for analytics, dashboards, and reporting to generate actionable insights.
β’ Continuously improve data systems and workflows to support future growth.
About you
We're looking for someone with:
β’ AWS
β’ Proven experience building data platforms from the ground up.
β’ Hands-on expertise with modern data engineering tools, cloud platforms, and database technologies.
β’ Strong knowledge of pipeline design, ETL processes, and data warehousing.
β’ A track record of embedding data quality, governance, and security best practices.
β’ Experience mentoring, training, and developing junior engineers.
Bonus points if you:
β’ Have experience in start-up or scale-up environments.
β’ Enjoy working in fast-paced, collaborative settings.
