Role description
Position Title: Senior Database Developer – Legacy Access to Cloud SQL Migration Location: Austin, TX Clearance Requirements: None Position Status: Contract (12 months, with strong likelihood of extension) Pay Rate: $60/hr on W2 Position Description We are seeking a Senior Database Developer with deep expertise in Microsoft Access to Cloud SQL migration for a public sector modernization initiative in Austin, TX. This is a high-impact role where you will lead the transformation of legacy Access databases into scalable, cloud-native SQL environments. The ideal candidate will combine hands-on technical expertise with the ability to work closely with program users and stakeholders, ensuring seamless migrations, optimized database performance, and long-term maintainability. This role is onsite in Austin and offers the opportunity to drive meaningful digital modernization within the public sector. Key Responsibilities β€’ Lead the modernization of legacy Microsoft Access databases into scalable, cloud-native SQL platforms. β€’ Collaborate with users to analyze existing data structures, design schema transformations, and define migration strategies. β€’ Develop and execute ETL pipelines using tools such as SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or AWS DMS. β€’ Optimize performance through schema refactoring, execution plan analysis, and batch workflow monitoring. β€’ Create migration runbooks, data dictionaries, technical documentation, and deliver knowledge-transfer sessions. β€’ Ensure all database interfaces (administration, reporting, and data entry) meet EIR Accessibility standards. β€’ Support post-migration operations, including validation, troubleshooting, and performance tuning. Required Skills & Experience β€’ 10+ years designing and maintaining advanced Microsoft Access databases (normalized tables, queries, forms, reports, VBA automation). β€’ 10+ years in relational database design, schema refactoring, ER modeling, and translating Access models into SQL schemas. β€’ 10+ years migrating legacy databases into cloud SQL services (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS, or equivalent). β€’ 8+ years developing ETL solutions with SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS, or similar tools. β€’ 8+ years producing migration documentation, data dictionaries, and knowledge-transfer deliverables. β€’ 8+ years with RDBMS administration tools (TOAD, SSMS, SQL Developer). β€’ 8+ years configuring and monitoring large-scale data integration and batch processes. Preferred Qualifications β€’ 6+ years with CI/CD tools (GitHub, JIRA) and Agile methodologies. β€’ 6+ years working with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau). β€’ 3+ years in healthcare or public health environments. β€’ Strong knowledge of Agile practices in public sector IT projects.
