Role description
Senior IoT Backend Engineer (Python/AWS)
Location: San Bruno, CA (Hybrid — 2 days/week in office)
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
Level: Senior
The Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Senior IoT Backend Engineer (Python/AWS) to lead cloud work across our AWS infrastructure for our client in the environmental sustainability space. This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining our end-to-end systems across web, mobile, cloud services, and data platforms that support critical customer experiences.
In this role, you'll work with a cross-functional group of engineers, guide architectural decisions, and help scale products that are essential to long-term growth and success.
This is not a data engineering / Hadoop role. This position is focused on connected device systems and IoT cloud services.
Note: No C2C or C2H arrangements will be considered. This is a direct contract engagement only. No agencies—unsolicited outreach will be reported as spam.
What You’ll Do
• Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers building web and mobile applications, cloud backends, and data pipelines
• Lead end-to-end technical delivery—from architecture and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and operations
• Collaborate with product and design teams to deliver intuitive and performant user experiences
• Champion modern software development practices, including CI/CD, IaC, observability, and test automation
• Ensure the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of our systems
• Promote a culture of ownership, learning, and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
• 6+ years as a cloud (services) engineer / backend engineer
• Strong API design experience, and an understanding of building asynchronous systems and error handling
• Strong background in Python development
• TypeScript and modern JavaScript development
• Hands-on experience with AWS
• Hands-on experience with IoT (AWS IoT is a plus)
• Familiarity with data pipelines and cloud-native data streaming and processing tools, such as Kinesis
• Data streaming and warehousing technologies like Kafka and Snowflake
• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably with serverless architectures and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g. API Gateway, Lambdas, RDS, DynamoDB, IAM, and CDK)
• Passion for building reliable systems with deep knowledge of observability, tracing, and system performance
• Excellent communication skills
• Passion for environmental sustainability.
Preferred Skills
• Mobile application development, including React Native, native modules, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), deep linking, and websockets
• Access control systems, such as designing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) for internal and external applications
• Experience with version control, CI/CD, and build systems (e.g., GitHub Actions)
• Familiarity with compliance and security standards like ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, and CPRA
Benefits
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• 401(k) plan
