Role description
Job Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Database Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL platforms to lead the modernization of legacy systems and ensure the seamless migration of critical databases. The Senior Database Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining advanced databases, migrating legacy Access databases into scalable SQL platforms, and implementing best practices in relational database design, performance tuning, and security.
This role will collaborate with program users, analysts, and development teams to analyze existing data structures, design schema transformations, develop ETL pipelines, validate migrated data, and deliver detailed documentation and knowledge transfer. The ideal candidate is a proven leader in database modernization efforts, skilled at bridging technical execution with business needs, and experienced in cloud-native database technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the migration of legacy Microsoft Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL environments (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS).
• Design, normalize, and optimize relational database schemas; perform schema refactoring and ER modeling.
• Develop and maintain complex Access queries, forms, reports, and VBA automations to support workflows prior to and during migration.
• Create and execute ETL pipelines using tools such as SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or AWS Database Migration Service (DMS).
• Build migration runbooks, data dictionaries, and documentation to support knowledge transfer and training for Agency staff.
• Perform data modeling, prototyping, logical/physical design, and schema validation for target SQL platforms.
• Conduct performance tuning and optimization of queries, indexes, and batch processes.
• Monitor and troubleshoot data ingestion and integration pipelines, review execution plans, and recommend efficiency improvements.
• Implement and enforce database security and recovery procedures, including backup/restore, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Ensure EIR Accessibility compliance for database user interfaces, reports, and administrative tools.
• Provide end-user support for data access requests, troubleshooting, and issue resolution.
• Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams, providing technical leadership on database-related tasks.
• Assist with cloud configuration, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices to enhance database deployment and version control.
• Contribute to reporting/visualization efforts using Power BI or Tableau when required.
