Role description
Project Overview:
Northern Trust Enterprise Monitoring & Tools Services is hiring a Senior Observability Consultant who will engage in and improve the lifecycle of monitoring and observability tools, monitoring product development and automation; from solution design, deployment, operation, and refinement.
Contractorβs Role:
The incumbent will support enterprise-wide projects in emerging technologies such as the public cloud, hybrid cloud, and container technologies, with a focus on the foundational support through observability. Participate and assist with a move towards an SRE work ethic with all work related to observability. Under general supervision, demonstrates a thorough understanding of the activities performed related to engineering support, installation and/or operations of infrastructure technologies. Plans at an operational level designing and developing technology solutions interfacing with appropriate customers, management and technical resources. Facilitates and/or participates in the design, development, and implementation of large complex technology solutions supporting one or more business and/or technology areas. Develops and implements appropriate solutions that may involve multiple platforms, databases, software/hardware technologies and tools. Strong ability to multi-task and reprioritize in an environment of changing priorities and digital transformation.

Qualifications (must haves):
β’ A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience, required.
β’ Bachelors Degree required in technology or relevant management area of study
β’ Ten years of experience in Technology and leadership or related consulting role required.
β’ Must have 5 plus years of experience in Application Performance Monitoring using enterprise standard tools
β’ Prior experience must include 2 years of experience working with agile scalable software engineering
β’ Must have knowledge in application architecture, OSI layers and software design and development methodologies
β’ Must have expert knowledge in ITSM, ITIL, CMDB, and ITOM Service Now capabilities
Preferred License and Certifications:
Any certifications related to the following is preferred:
β’ Dynatrace or equivalent APM Tool
β’ ServiceNow
β’ AWS/Azure/GCP
β’ ITIL/ITOM

Daily Tasks & Responsibilities:
β’ Support systems before they go live through activities such as design consulting, developing software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning, and launch reviews
β’ Monitor and maintain tools and platform solutions post-go-live by measuring availability, latency, capacity, and overall system health
β’ Scale systems sustainably through automation; evolve systems to improve reliability and velocity
β’ Develop monitoring/observability applications and automations, following industry best practices
β’ Practice sustainable incident response and blameless postmortems
β’ Collaborate with coworkers as a member of an Agile (Scrum) team
β’ Develop clear solution documentation with appropriate instructions and knowledge-base articles
β’ Develop ITSM Event Management strategy and roadmap including but not limited to alerting best practices; success KPIs and metrics, improvement opportunities and outcomes
β’ Drive tool sprawl reduction efforts, operational effectiveness of observability tools
β’ Lead discussions and collaboration efforts with stakeholders to design and implement ITOM Event Mgmt service mapping capabilities through effective alerting and routing
β’ Ensure stability and quality of SNOW Service Graph integration tools as they pertain to observability tools
β’ Lead Observability and Event Management strategy sessions, including projects, stakeholder meetings, and presentations to executive leadership
β’ Meet with internal customers to review, evaluate and provide direction for our monitoring and logging solutions.
β’ Research and thoroughly study documentation to implement new tools or features of existing tools
β’ Evaluates systems specifications regarding customer requirements, transforming specifications into cost-effective, technically correct solutions.
β’ Prioritizes work and manages projects within established budget objectives and customer priorities.
β’ Responsible for establishing and managing to established quality control and security protocols.
β’ Provides the division, department and business area management with timely and accurate information regarding the status and performance of the assigned project(s).
β’ Leverages technology to develop, redesign and/or implement optimal technology solutions.
β’ Builds, leverages, and maintains effective alliances across technical and business community.
β’ Interacts with customers to achieve efficient, effective results.
β’ Multi-tasks, prioritizes according to business priorities and production availability requirements.
β’ Promote Automated remediation principals by targeting optimal observability strategies
β’ Have a high level understanding of the application stacks and utilize that to trace, profile and optimize application performance within and across multiple technology stacks
β’ Help build Highly-Available and Scalable infrastructure with robust monitoring and alerting mechanisms
β’ Engineer solutions and establish standards for infrastructure, agent deployments, and decommissioning by automating manual tasks where possible
β’ On-board applications to the platforms and train users on how to use the tools and best proactive monitoring techniques
β’ Integration with enterprise monitoring tools data visualization needs
β’ Other duties as assigned.
