Role description
Role: Senior Sr. Engineer/Architect for Tivoli/IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS)
Location: Remote
Duration: Contract
Work Authorization: US Citizen, Green Card, or authorized to work in the US
Primary Focus:
IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS) (formerly known as Tivoli Workload Scheduler). High level responsibilities may include systems engineering,architecture, administration, integrations, security, IWS internals, APIs, upgrades, and root cause analysis.
Responsibilities | IBM Workload Scheduler (Tivoli):
• Overall platform stability
• Ability to stepping away from the app itself and looking at the overall solution, platform efficiency and stability, architecture, availability, etc.
• Define and manage monitoring policies for application teams. Implement proactive monitoring
• Develop and maintain custom scripts/tools, APIs, or plugins
• Capacity planning and performance tuning
Engineering:
• Integrate IWS with enterprise applications (e.g., SAP, Informatica, Oracle)
• Architect dynamic scheduling, cloud integration, and containers
• Design and develop automated solutions to enhance batch and platform performance
• Fine tune WebSphere/Liberty application server for performance
• Develop customized REST API interfaces for application teams
Other responsibilities may include:
• Root Cause Analysis: Performing root cause analyses (RCA) for recurring or high-impact issues
• HA/DR: Design and develop High Availability and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies and solutions. Test and
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: IBM Workload Automation (IWS)
• Deep expertise in IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS) internals (including workload modeling, calendars, job streams, and dependencies)
• Strong knowledge of IWS’s latest scheduling concepts for complex scheduling requirements, forecasting, and predictive analysis capabilities
IBM Workload Automation (IWS) continued…
• Hands-on experience with Dynamic Workload Console (DWC), Dynamic Agents, and Dynamic Broker Server
• Proficiency in configuring advanced job types (e.g., WebService, REST API, Java, S3, Cloud-native jobs) using native and custom plugins
• Strong command of IWS CLI tools, including configuring event processor components, and event rule logic
• Experience designing and maintaining High Availability (HA) configurations (MDM/BDM)
• Ability to integrate IWS with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud), using native and agentless plugin setups
• Skilled in agentless and extended agent configurations, and external integrations via EIM listeners
Infrastructure Security
• Expert-level knowledge of DB2, with working experience in Oracle and optionally PostgreSǪL
• Solid understanding of IWS database schemas, relationships, and ability to write/optimize custom SǪL queries
• Deep experience with Linux/Unix operating systems administration and troubleshooting
• Knowledge of Windows Services and their interaction with workload automation
Scripting Automation
• Automation-first mindset
• Expertise in Shell scripting (Bash, KornShell) and Python
• Experience with REST APIs and workload automation scripting
• Strong in documentation practices and ability to perform root cause analyses (RCA)
• Familiarity with migrating IWS workloads from on-prem to cloud-based platforms
Team Collaboration G Leadership
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Experience working in SAFe Agile frameworks, including 2-week sprints and 10-week program increments
Additional areas highly preferred:
• Familiarity with Atlassian tools such as Jira and Confluence
• Exposure to Docker, Slack, and especially ServiceNow in enterprise environments
Desired Experience:
• Ideally 5-10+ years of prior experience with job scheduling tools including (but not limited to) IBM Workload Scheduler IWS (formerly known as Tivoli Workload Scheduler), Autosys, Control-M, BMC, etc.
• Experience should include leading in application upgrades, architecture migrations, and custom solutions
• Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others
