Role description
Title: Sr. Financial Data Engineer – SQL & Analytics Specialist
No 3rd party C2C's please, No sponsorship opportunities, must be able to engage directly
About the Role
We’re looking for a financially fluent data engineer who thrives on tackling messy, unstructured, and unpredictable data — the kind that doesn’t come in neat tables with perfect documentation. This role is perfect for someone who loves SQL problem-solving, can wrangle data from a variety of sources (APIs, JSON, spreadsheets, legacy systems), and knows how to transform it into accurate, usable insights for finance teams.
You’ll work in a fast-moving environment where adaptability, communication, and organization matter more than big-company pedigree. Our data ecosystem is evolving, and you’ll help shape how financial data is managed, documented, and delivered to the people who need it most.
What You’ll Do
• Own the design, maintenance, and optimization of SQL-based data pipelines with Apache Airflow.
• Ingest, clean, and structure financial data from multiple, often messy sources (ERP systems, accounting tools, APIs, flat files).
• Partner with Finance, FP&A, and other teams to translate business and accounting requirements into technical solutions.
• Ensure data accuracy, reconciliation, and compliance in line with accounting and financial reporting standards.
• Create and maintain clear, usable documentation for processes, pipelines, and data models.
• Act as the bridge between finance and data engineering — making sure complex financial data is understood by both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Adapt quickly to shifting priorities, unusual data formats, and ad-hoc reporting needs.
What You Bring
• Strong background in finance, accounting, or financial analytics — you know your way around ledgers, P&L, and balance sheets.
• Expert-level SQL skills — this is your primary tool and you’re comfortable handling complexity in it.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Airflow (or similar orchestration tools).
• Comfort working with unstructured, messy, or incomplete datasets.
• Experience pulling and shaping data from APIs, JSON, and diverse SQL environments.
• Solid understanding of ETL/ELT concepts (depth in tools secondary to adaptability).
• Excellent communication and documentation skills — able to explain your work to finance teams and tech teams alike.
• A flexible, problem-solving mindset — more “figure it out” than “wait for requirements.”
Nice to Have
• Exposure to Python for light scripting or automation (not a core focus).
• Familiarity with cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, etc.).
• Previous experience in a startup or fast-scaling environment.
Why You’ll Love This Role
• You’ll work with high-impact financial data that drives decision-making.
• You’ll get variety — every dataset and problem will be a little different.
• You’ll shape data processes in an environment where practicality beats bureaucracy.
