Role description
About Us Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation. Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise. They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects. We use that โ€˜whole energyโ€™ system capability to support innovative companies -- small and large โ€“ to test, trial and scale their new products and services. Our impact comes when those innovators attract new customers, new investment and new grants so they can thrive in the future energy system. Based in Birmingham, Energy Systems Catapult is part of a network of nine, world-leading technology and innovation centres, established by Innovate UK. The Catapult Network fosters collaboration between industry, government, research organisations, academia, and many others to transform great ideas into valuable products and services. We believe that innovation often stems from connecting different areas and ideas, and that working together in person can be an important enabler for that. We therefore expect people to be in the Birmingham office ~40 days/year (roughly one day per week). Context We're a dynamic team of eight commercial specialists, leading the charge in energy innovation. With a proven track record of delivering high-impact bids, we support a diverse range of organisationsโ€”from central government and local authorities to network operators and private sector companies. Our expertise spans the full spectrum of energy solutions, helping partners unlock funding, accelerate projects, and shape the future of sustainable infrastructure. We are seeking to recruit an AI Prompt Engineer to help us transform how we create, manage and deliver high-quality bids and proposals alongside streamlining procurement activities. The Role You will design, optimise and deploy AI-powered tools and workflows to support our bid management function and wider business development activities. This is a hands-on role where youโ€™ll collaborate closely with bid managers, writers, and technical specialists to improve the efficiency, quality and consistency of our outputs. Reporting to the Head of Account and Bid Management, youโ€™ll be responsible for building prompt libraries and templates, automating bid content generation, and supporting the safe and ethical use of generative AI across the organisation. Key Responsibilities Develop and refine prompt libraries and templates from previous high scoring bids and also the latest sector knowledge for bid writing, proposals, case studies, CVs risk registers, and project delivery plans. Create AI-assisted workflows for proposal preparation, literature reviews, market research, and internal knowledge capture. Train and support colleagues in effective prompt design and responsible AI use. Integrate AI tools with existing platforms (e.g. Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint). Establish quality assurance and governance around generative AI use, including confidentiality, IP, and data security. Identify and prototype new AI use cases that streamline internal processes and improve bid competitiveness. Document workflows and build a handover toolkit to ensure capability transfer by the end of the contract. What credentials are we ideally looking for? Proven experience developing and optimising prompts for large language models (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar). Experience integrating AI with enterprise tools or APIs. Understanding of structured content and version control in bid or technical writing environments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach to delivery. Ability to train and support non-technical users in AI tools. Awareness of AI ethics, governance and data protection principles. โ€ข Positive demeanour, self-motivated, approaches work with integrity, resilience and tenacity. โ€ข Highly organised, ability to work at pace and able to work to deadlines. โ€ข Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise at all levels. Ability to thrive in an environment that values real world impact, openness and simplicity. Someone who is an excellent team player and has the confidence to bring new ideas to the team to improve the way we work and our success rate.
