Role description
Job Title: API Developer Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid – 3 days onsite) Rate: $60–65/hr on W2 (No C2C) Duration: Through year-end, with potential extension Overview We are seeking an experienced Principal API Developer to lead our API development team. This role requires deep expertise in API design, architecture, cloud platforms, and DevOps tools. The ideal candidate will be both a technical leader and hands-on developer who can design scalable, secure, and efficient APIs while mentoring team members and driving API-first adoption across the enterprise. Key Responsibilities β€’ Lead the design, development, and deployment of high-quality APIs. β€’ Define API specifications and requirements in collaboration with product managers, architects, and developers. β€’ Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the API development team. β€’ Ensure APIs are secure, scalable, and maintainable following industry best practices. β€’ Troubleshoot and resolve complex integration and performance issues. β€’ Drive adoption of API-first principles across the organization. β€’ Stay up to date with emerging API technologies and frameworks. β€’ Document API designs, processes, and usage guidelines for both internal and external stakeholders. Required Skills β€’ Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field. β€’ Proven experience as an API Developer, with 2+ years in a leadership role. β€’ Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, REST, and GraphQL. β€’ Hands-on experience with API management platforms (Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway, etc.). β€’ Proficiency with DevOps and cloud tools: Terraform, AWS, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines. β€’ Solid understanding of system architecture and software integration. β€’ Strong knowledge of API security protocols. β€’ Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills. Soft Skills β€’ Leadership – inspire and guide development teams. β€’ Communication – able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. β€’ Time Management – manage competing priorities efficiently. β€’ Collaboration – strong cross-team relationship-building skills.
