Role description
Category Analyst — Role Summary
The Category Analyst supports Category Management by turning spend, supplier, market, and sourcing data into actionable insights used to build category strategies and monitor supplier performance.
This is a highly analytical procurement/supply chain role. The ideal candidate should have a finance, engineering, economics, computer science, or technical/business background with strong data analysis skills.
Key Responsibilities
The person will be responsible for:
• Gathering and analyzing category spend data
• Performing spend analysis, including off-contract or non-compliant spend
• Building baselines from category data
• Conducting supply market analysis, including suppliers, benchmarks, indices, cost drivers, and market trends
• Creating sourcing evaluation models and negotiation models
• Building total cost of ownership models
• Developing supplier scorecards, KPIs, service-level metrics, and monitoring tools
• Supporting category strategy development
• Maintaining databases of potential suppliers
• Supporting current-state and future-state process documentation
Required / Strongly Preferred Background
Ideal candidate profile:
• 3–5 years of experience in category management, procurement analytics, sourcing analysis, supply chain analytics, or data analysis
• Engineering, finance, economics, computer science, or business-related degree
• Strong analytics and financial acumen
• Experience with tools such as:
• Power BI
• Tableau
• Python
• SQL
• QlikView
• Alteryx
• Experience extracting data from relational databases
• Rail industry experience is preferred, but not mandatory
• Project management or supply chain certification is desirable
