Role description
Company Description
Hey Social Good is a social impact data company that Assess-Guide-Verify businesses and brands for their sustainable, giveback, and socially responsible practices. Hey Social Good offers the most credible sustainability data to help businesses reduce risk and capitalize on social good benefits. Using a custom data assessment engine, Hey Social Good identifies key sustainable insights and promotes transparency in operations and supply chains. Their platform aggregates and analyzes vast amounts of business data to deliver reliable social impact intelligence. In the last 5 years, Hey Social Good has identified an 80% gap in greenwashing by fashion brands and supply chain operators when describing their brand and sustainable benefits.
As we scale, the stakes for our data integrity have never been higher. We aren't just looking for a "model builder"—we are looking for a Data Analyst who understands that behind every data point is a human story. Your critical job is to ensure that the insights we provide to our partners are accurate, ethical, and actionable.
Role Description
This is a hybrid contract role for a Data Analyst based in San Diego, CA, with some remote work flexibility. The Data Analyst will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting complex datasets, building data models, and generating actionable insights to support business decisions and social impact measurement. This is a 'hands-on' role where you likely have direct contact with the data from the point of collection/entry through to final deliverable.
Key Responsibilities
• Data Stewardship: Execute precise data entry while designing and maintaining validation protocols to prevent errors at the source.
• Data Integrity: Build and manage data dictionaries; integrate and merge data from disparate sources while ensuring seamless flow and deduplication.
• Wrangling & Cleaning: Transform raw, "noisy" datasets into structured, analysis-ready formats.
• Error Analysis: Conduct deep-dive analyses to identify systemic biases, outliers, or collection gaps that could compromise scientific integrity.
• Scientific Discovery: Lead Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and execute hypothesis testing, applying statistical rigor (regression, ANOVA, significance testing) to experimental data.
• Visualization: Translate complex findings into data stories through clear visualizations and interactive dashboards (Tableau, Power BI, or Plotly).
• Documentation: Maintain reproducible research pipelines, ensuring all code and methodologies are documented for internal audits and peer review.
Requirements & Skills
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Environmental Science, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience: 1–3 years of experience (or high-level project work) handling the full data lifecycle—from ingestion to insights.
• Technical Stack: Proficiency in SQL, Python (Pandas/NumPy), or R. Experience with Excel (Power Query) and Version Control (Git).
• Scientific Mindset: A commitment to objective truth and the ability to pinpoint errors that others miss.
• Adaptability: A "startup soul" who is excited to build new processes where none exist.
• Bonus: Prior experience or demonstrated interest in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics or corporate sustainability reporting.
Other Skills
• Obsessive Attention to Detail: Because we validate sustainability practices, a single data entry error can undermine a client's credibility. You must have a propensity to pinpoint errors.
• Scientific Integrity: A commitment to objective truth. You have a strong sense of human centric design and identifying the actual impact in the complex space of sustainability data.
• Adaptability: Experience (or a strong desire) working in a start-up environment. You are excited by the prospect of building new processes where none exist.
• Communication: The ability to explain a complex "Error Analysis" to a non-technical client in a way that is empowering, not confusing.
Compensation & Transparency
Salary Range: $70,500 – $85,000 per year
In accordance with California’s Pay Transparency law, this range represents the good-faith base salary that Hey Social Good reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final compensation is determined by the candidate's specific skills and experience.
Total Rewards Package:
• Equity Options: Participation in our Employee Stock Option Plan (own a piece of the mission).
• Health & Wellness: Monthly Health Insurance Stipend (ICHRA): We provide a $500 monthly tax-free reimbursement to help you pay for the health insurance plan of your choice through the California exchange.
• Wellness & Home Office Fund: $100/month for mental health, fitness, or ergonomic support.
• Retirement: 401(k) plan with company matching.
• Commuter Benefits: Public transit subsidy for eco-friendly commuting.
• Growth: Dedicated professional development budget for certifications and training.
• Flexibility: Hybrid work environment with flexible hours.
