Role description
Venn Group are working with a Local Authority to recruit an interim Data Protection Officer.
The Data Protection Officer is responsible for overseeing and implementing data protection compliance across the organisation, acting as the Subject Matter Expert advising colleagues at all levels of the organisation on relevant data protection matters.
This role holder's main aim is to ensure that adherence to the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 and other relevant data protection laws, safeguarding the privacy and security of personal data processed by the organisation.
The Data Protection Officer will act as the primary point of contact for the ICO.
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Rate: £500-550 umbrella
Length: 3 months initially
Working Arrangements: Hybrid, 2 days onsite per week
Location: London
Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive data protection strategy
• Conduct DPIAs for high-risk data processing activities
• Monitor and review DPIAs to ensure ongoing compliance
• Manage and respond to data subject requests, including data access, rectification, erasure, and objection
• Ensure timely and accurate responses to data subject enquiries
• Develop and maintain a robust data breach response plan
• Investigate and report data breaches to the relevant authorities
• Conduct regular data protection risk assessments and implement appropriate safeguards, including the implementation of a ROPA (Record of processing activities)
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of data protection measures
• Ensure compliance with UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 requirements and other relevant data protection laws
• Maintain records of all data processing activities of the company
• Conduct regular audits and reviews to identify potential compliance gaps
• Review contracts and other third-party data processing and data sharing arrangements
• Develop and deliver data protection training programs for all employees
• Implement a staff awareness and training program to enable the effective identification and reporting of potential data breaches
• Promote a culture of data protection awareness within the organisation
• Cooperate with all supervisory authorities in investigations and inquiries
Experience and Skills:
• 2 or more years’ experience working within Data Protection / Information Governance in the public sector: NHS or Local Government essential
• Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, Freedom of Information Act 2000, Environmental Information Regulations 2004, Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, and other associated legislation and ICO Accountability framework requirements
