The Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) is seeking a Senior DevOps / Software Release Engineer to join our Technology Services Division. This is a pivotal role focused on designing, implementing, and continuously improving our continuous integration pipelines, release processes, and internal tooling. It’s an exciting opportunity to advocate for DevOps best practices while making a measurable impact on deployment frequency, operational efficiency, and lead time for changes. At ASRS, we prioritize a stable, work-life balanced environment. Our teams are highly engaged and productive during business hours without the expectation of weekend, overtime, or after-hours work. We do not use offshore resources, and our team members take pride in delivering high-quality, reliable, and secure software solutions that support public employees and retirees across Arizona. In this role, you’ll design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate build, test, and deployment processes. Expert-level experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions is required, along with strong skills in Jenkins for continuous integration builds. You’ll lead all software release activities, from code commits to artifact deployment in UAT and production environments, while configuring automated deployment strategies across development, UAT, and production. Setting up and managing application health monitoring, alerting, and logging systems will be part of your daily routine, along with analyzing logs and metrics to quickly identify and resolve issues. The Senior DevOps Engineer will work closely with application development, infrastructure, and QA teams to maintain secure, stable, and efficient systems. You’ll actively participate in technical envisioning, design sessions, and project delivery efforts while advocating for continuous improvement initiatives. This role will also be responsible for producing release status reports for leadership, working with source code management systems like Bitbucket and GitHub, and troubleshooting complex issues with a proactive, problem-solving mindset. Experience in Agile/Scrum environments is expected. Required technical expertise includes hands-on experience with source code management tools (Bitbucket, GitHub), Java build tools (Maven, Gradle), Linux and Windows operating systems, scripting languages (PowerShell, Bash), Java or similar programming languages, CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), and the Atlassian ecosystem (Jira, Confluence). Familiarity with Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar container-based architectures is a plus. Success in this role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate is organized, able to prioritize multiple projects, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Accountability, strong time management, and the ability to respond quickly to operational issues are essential. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity, with eligibility for conversion to a full-time Arizona State employee after six months, pending a successful HR interview and offer. The position offers a primarily remote work arrangement (around 80%), with occasional in-office meetings at our Phoenix headquarters for collaborative sessions. Candidates must reside in Arizona and be eligible to work for any employer without sponsorship. ASRS provides all necessary equipment for secure remote work, though candidates must have a personal laptop available for initial access and configuration. If you’re a driven, solution-oriented professional eager to contribute to meaningful projects and operational improvements in a collaborative, balanced environment β€” we encourage you to apply.
