Role description
Job Title: Technical Analyst – Data & Tenant Discovery (Applications, Identity & Unstructured Data)
Role Summary
We are seeking a highly capable and versatile Technical Analyst (Contractor) to support enterprise-scale migration and transformation programmes. This role will involve leading and contributing to discovery and analysis activities across applications, identity/authentication, unstructured data, users, devices, and organisational structures.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in application and data discovery, file server and unstructured data analysis, identity and authentication assessments, and migration readiness. You will play a key role in providing insights to design and deliver secure, efficient, and seamless migration strategies to Microsoft 365 platforms (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams).
The programme is a Digital Workplace initiative, aiming to consolidate disparate UK divisions into a central UK-wide enterprise IT capability.
Key Deliverables
Application & Data Estate Analysis:
• Inventory and assess applications, dependencies, and hosting platforms.
• Discovery and analysis of unstructured data across file servers (volumes, usage patterns, ROT data, permissions).
• Recommendations for data rationalisation, ownership assignment, and migration readiness.
Authentication & Identity Analysis:
• Assess authentication methods (AD, LDAP, Kerberos, OAuth, SAML, OpenID Connect).
• Identify legacy barriers and recommend remediation for modern identity platforms (Azure AD / Entra ID).
• User, Device & Mailbox Discovery:
• Map accounts, groups, roles, and devices for compliance and migration readiness.
• Perform Exchange mailbox and shared mailbox analysis.
Organisational & Governance Discovery:
• Analyse directory structures (OUs, group policies, RBAC models).
• Identify collaboration requirements, governance implications, and security risks.
• Provide input on information architecture, metadata tagging, and retention policies.
Reporting & Documentation:
• Produce detailed reports, dashboards, and technical documentation to inform migration wave planning and decision-making.
• Support runbooks, remediation plans, and readiness assessments.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform deep technical discovery across applications, file servers, identity systems, users, devices, and unstructured data.
• Engage with application owners, business units, and infrastructure teams to validate findings and resolve data gaps.
• Analyse permissions (NTFS, ACLs, role-based access) to support secure migration planning.
• Identify and document risks, dependencies, and blockers to migration.
• Provide technical input on governance, compliance, and adoption strategies for M365.
• Collaborate with migration engineers, architects, and programme teams to align discovery with execution.
Required Skills & Experience
• Strong technical analysis experience in large-scale migration, tenant consolidation, or data transformation programmes.
• Hands-on expertise in:
• Application & Data Discovery (legacy, web, SaaS, file servers, unstructured data)
• Identity & Authentication Protocols (AD, LDAP, Kerberos, SAML, OAuth, OpenID Connect)
• User & Device Analysis (Azure AD/Entra ID, Intune, SCCM, hybrid AD environments)
• M365 Services (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams)
• Permissions & Security (NTFS, ACLs, governance, compliance frameworks)
• Experience with data discovery/migration tools (ShareGate, AvePoint, Metalogix, Microsoft Mover, PowerShell scripting).
• Excellent data analysis and reporting skills (Excel, Power BI desirable).
• Strong communication and documentation skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migrations or file server to SharePoint Online programmes.
• Awareness of security, compliance, and governance requirements (GDPR, ISO 27001).
• Familiarity with adoption and change management within Microsoft 365 ecosystems.
Working Location
• Hybrid working with travel (approx. 2–3 days per week onsite) to the Yeovil, Somerset site to build stakeholder engagement and relationships.
• Fully remote is not viable; expect upwards of 50% onsite with business and IT stakeholders.
