Java Architect (Cloud Native / OCI / Microservices)
Location: Richmond, VA
Duration: 12+ month contract position
Job Description:
We're hiring a Java Architect who gets enterprise scale, knows cloud-native patterns inside out, and thrives on designing systems that just work-cleanly, securely, and efficiently. If you've architected modern microservices, worked hands-on with OCI (or any major cloud), and can lead by example with both backend and frontend teams, we want to talk.
What You'll Do:
β’ Define and drive architecture for large-scale, high-performance Java applications
β’ Design cloud-native solutions using microservices that are modular, resilient, and easy to evolve
β’ Lead architecture reviews, guide devs and tech leads through clean implementation paths
β’ Own containerized deployments using Spring Boot, Docker, REST APIs, and message-driven design
β’ Shape the frontend tech stack-Angular (13+), TypeScript, modern UI patterns
β’ Integrate with OCI services: IAM, Compute, Load Balancer, Object Storage, Networking (VCNs)
β’ Build and maintain architecture diagrams, API contracts, and system flows
β’ Set standards around security, compliance, and performance
β’ Mentor engineering teams, promote DevOps culture, and enforce CI/CD best practices
β’ Work directly with business teams to align solutions with real-world needs
Must-Have Skills:
β’ 10+ years in Java/JEE, including at least 3 years in architecture roles
β’ Strong hands-on experience with Java 8 21, Spring (Boot, Core, Batch), JPA, REST/SOAP
β’ Proven work designing and deploying apps on OCI, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
β’ Expert in microservices architecture: API gateway, service registry, circuit breakers, etc.
β’ Solid grasp of containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes is a plus)
β’ Frontend leadership with Angular (13+), TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3
β’ Experience integrating with OCI services: Compute, LB, IAM, VCN, Object Storage
β’ Deep SQL and Oracle RDBMS knowledge, including tuning and optimization
β’ Familiarity with DevSecOps, GitHub Actions/Jenkins, and IaC principles
β’ Confident with Linux/Unix environments, scripting, and securing systems
Bonus Points for:
β’ Legacy modernization experience (monolith to microservices)
β’ Knowledge of WebSphere / WebSphere Liberty
β’ Experience with Kafka, JMS, and distributed caching
β’ Collaborating with QA teams using ACCELQ or other automation platforms
β’ Performance/load testing and DR architecture planning
You'll Fit If You:
β’ Think in systems, not just code
β’ Communicate clearly with devs, stakeholders, and leadership alike
β’ Lead by doing-not just drawing diagrams
β’ Stay curious about new tech and patterns, but know when to keep it simple
