Job summary
Join the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as a Lead Data Engineer and be a vital part of the criminal justice system in England and Wales. Operating independently, the CPS’ work upholds the rule of law and ensures that justice is served fairly and impartially for victims, witnesses, and defendants.
This is a unique opportunity for you to contribute to the UK's justice system through the development and maintenance of a modern and robust data infrastructure predominantly in a Microsoft Azure environment.
As part of the Data Platform team, you will lead technical colleagues and engage with business stakeholders to understand requirements, advise on data solutions, and ensure that the systems you build are both functional and user-focused.
Your data engineering expertise will help shape a data-driven culture within the CPS, ensuring that the organisation remains responsive and effective in a rapidly evolving data landscape.
The Crown Prosecution Service is based in England and Wales. If you’re applying for this role and live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you must let us know when accepting this offer as you need permission to work from your home address if hybrid working is part of your role. There’s no guarantee that we will grant this approval.
You must be aged 16 before starting in this role. The start date is expected to be 8-12 weeks after the application deadline.
As part of this role, you are expected to undertake direct line management responsibilities.
Job Description
Your roles and responsibilities:
• you lead the implementation of rigorous data validation and quality checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data used for analytics and business intelligence.
• you manage the monitoring and optimisation of ETL processes and data flows to maintain high performance and efficiency, minimising downtime and errors, ensuring clear communication channels with users and stakeholders, soliciting feedback and managing expectations throughout the data lifecycle.
• you implement comprehensive and up-to-date documentation of data processes, source-to-target mappings, and system configurations to support transparency and ease of maintenance.
• you manage the development and maintenance of data products that meet the needs of stakeholders, ensuring they are user-friendly and accessible.
• you seek and act on feedback to improve own performance and stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in data engineering, and actively seek opportunities for professional development through training, certifications, and industry events.
• you lead on the recognition and celebration of the achievements and contributions of self and others while fostering a collaborative learning environment by encouraging team members to share insights, experiences, and innovative solutions to common problems.
• you are responsible for mentoring and supporting junior data engineers by sharing knowledge, best practices, and providing guidance on complex technical challenges.
• you implement data analytics and business intelligence solutions to inform decision-making processes, ensuring that decisions are based on accurate and relevant data.
• you explain decisions and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex data engineering challenges, identifying the most effective solutions.

Person specification
To be eligible to apply, you need:
• extensive hands-on experience designing and implementing complex data pipelines and architecture, ideally at enterprise scale.
• to be an expert in SQL, ETL/ELT design patterns, data modelling and infrastructure as a code.
• a strong grasp of data governance, privacy and security.
• experience in team leadership and technical product delivery.
• proven leadership in delivering data solutions in cloud environments.
It is desirable that you have the below experience but this is not required to apply:
• experience with Azure Data Factory, Python language and Databricks.
