Role description
Purpose of Role:
β’ The purpose of Materials Rationalisation is to optimise materials management by eliminating duplication, standardising inventory in line with the Spare Parts Management Guideline and reducing unnecessary complexity across the supply chain. Through data cleansing, consolidation, and alignment with engineering and operational requirements, the materials rationalisation role will ensure that only the right materials are created, stocked, and purchased
β’ The rationalisation is to analyse inventory for value reduction, improved master data accuracy, improved compliance with materials standards and governance, ensure all critical spares are linked to Asset/Location and Bill of Materials (BOM) as per OEM/Engineering recommendations
β’ Data analysis to ensure materials are sourced to the right place, at the right time, at the right price, at the right quantity, and to the right quality
Critical Responsibilities:
β’ Review, cleanse, and rationalise material master records to remove duplicates, obsolete items, and redundant stock
β’ Ensure material master data accuracy in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Maximo Sphera)
β’ Work with Engineering and Operations to identify opportunities for standardising materials, specifications, and approved alternatives
β’ Consolidate material variants and move towards a common parts strategy across sites, on & offshore
β’ Analyse inventory levels, usage patterns, and demand history to identify materials suitable for removal, consolidation, or consumption-only strategies
β’ Manage all disposals as a result of the rationalisation to completion as per HBR Disposals procedure and lead the change management process for material updates, additions, or deletions
β’ Ensure compliance with company HSES standards, technical specifications, quality requirements, and regulatory rules
β’ Engage cross functional teams including Procurement, Engineering, Quality, Operations, Planning, and Warehousing to identify opportunities for standardising materials, specifications, and approved alternatives.
β’ Provide content & reporting to communicate the rationalisation benefits and progress to leadership.
Areas of Accountability, Responsibility and Competence:
β’ Report on stock reduction, inventory value changes, master data accuracy (Spares Parts List & BOMβs), and rationalisation progress
β’ Maintain and accountable for KPIβs and rationalisation plan progress, providing data for dashboards and performance metrics
β’ Provide insights and recommendations for ongoing improvements and supplier leverage to reduced risk
β’ Visit sites to complete physical analysis of materials and document all technical queries with Job Responsible Engineer (JREβs) to completion Inventory Optimisation
β’ Oversee the review of inventory levels ensuring any excess can be eliminated or justified
β’ Ensure effective and efficient investment recovery takes place for all disposals
β’ Capture metrics related to accuracy, timeliness, process efficiency, and other relevant Materials rationalisation data points, and communicate with team and challenge team members to elevate performance levels
β’ Champion inventory best practices and drive expectations of inventory management with team members and internal stakeholders

β’ Background in Materials Management, Procurement, Supply Chain, or Engineering.
β’ Experience with material master data, catalogue management, or inventory optimisation projects.
β’ Demonstrated delivery of rationalisation or standardisation initiatives
β’ Degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or related discipline (preferred)
β’ Six Sigma experience and training
Skills
β’ Strong understanding of material management, supply chain principles, and inventory optimisation
β’ Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets
β’ ERP proficiency (SAP/MM/Maximo) or equivalent systems experience)
β’ Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
