Role description
OpenStack Engineer – Private Cloud We’re looking for an OpenStack Engineer to support our client who are building the next generation of private cloud infrastructure, as an OpenStack Engineer you'll solve complex problems at scale. This role is about creating an environment where high-intensity compute, storage, and networking workloads can run seamlessly, securely, and with minimal friction. You’ll be working in a hands-on role that combines architecture, automation, and platform engineering. Collaboration is central, you’ll work alongside specialists across infrastructure, security, and software engineering to shape and expand a platform that directly powers business-critical research and analysis. What you’ll do • Develop and evolve a private cloud environment that can scale reliably as demand grows • Automate provisioning, deployment, and lifecycle management using modern IaC practices • Optimize how workloads are scheduled, executed, and supported across compute and storage layers • Diagnose issues across distributed systems, improving reliability and performance • Anticipate capacity requirements and ensure the platform grows ahead of demand • Contribute to open source communities and influence the direction of core technologies • Act as an advocate for the platform — gathering feedback, building features, and supporting end users • Share knowledge and mentor peers to strengthen the wider engineering community What you bring • Proven ability to run and improve OpenStack platforms in demanding production settings • Hands-on knowledge of distributed storage systems such as CEPH • Strong Linux background with a focus on troubleshooting and performance tuning • Fluency with automation frameworks (e.g. Ansible, Terraform) and IaC principles • Comfort writing and maintaining code in at least one programming language (Python ideal) • Understanding of core networking concepts and distributed system design • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and version control workflows • Familiarity with container ecosystems (Docker, Kubernetes) • Practical understanding of hardware management and provisioning Useful extras • Knowledge of OpenStack deployment frameworks (Kolla Ansible or similar) • Exposure to bare-metal provisioning technologies (Ironic, MaaS) • Background with HashiCorp tooling (Vault, Terraform) • Experience running HPC or low-latency compute environments • Skills in monitoring, observability, and reliability engineering practices What’s in it for you This is a chance to work on infrastructure that sits at the edge of performance and reliability. You’ll join a team that values problem-solving, experimentation, and technical excellence. Expect opportunities to broaden your skills, contribute to cutting-edge projects, and grow your career in an environment that rewards initiative and innovation.
