Introduction
Gateway Housing has been supporting communities to thrive since 1926. We are an ambitious London based housing association with over 3,000 homes in the heart of London's East End. We provide social rented homes, shared ownership, and sheltered housing. We develop new homes too and are part way through an exciting programme to deliver another 250 homes by 2025. The role
We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer (24 months FTC) to lead the design and implementation of Gateway Housing Association's enterprise data architecture and engineering strategy, enabling scalable, secure, and high-quality data services. This role will support the organisation's digital transformation by building robust data platforms, pipelines, and models that underpin decision-making, operational performance, and innovation.
The Principal Data Engineer will work collaboratively with technology, 3rd party partner, senior leadership, and business stakeholders to modernise and unify data systems across the organisation.
Accountabilities
Your accountabilities will include but not limited to:
Define and implement enterprise data models, pipelines, and metadata management
Develop and maintain data platform components (e.g., data lake, warehouse, ETL frameworks)
Ensure data security, compliance, and ethical use of data in accordance with GDPR and Cyber Essentials Plus
Act as a senior technical authority in data, mentoring others and setting engineering standards
Drive the evaluation and implementation of cloud technologies (e.g., Azure, Synapse, Fabric)
Collaborate with technology and business leads to define data requirements
Support the delivery of strategic projects including housing management transformation, customer portal, and self-service

Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
Advanced SQL and scripting skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for data engineering, automation and orchestration tasks.
Data Architecture Design - Strong ability to define and implement modern enterprise data architectures, including data lakes, data warehouses, and data mesh/data fabric concepts
Data Modelling - Experience designing logical and physical data models (e.g., star schema, snowflake, third normal form), with strong understanding of master and reference data management.
Strong understanding of modern enterprise data architecture principles, including data warehousing, data lakes, and relational databases.
Knowledge of data integration patterns and technologies (e.g., ETL, ELT, API-first), including near real-time and event-driven approaches.
Experience working with business stakeholders, analysts, and developers to translate business needs into technical solutions.
