Senior Business Intelligence (Power BI) Developer
Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Business Intelligence (Power BI) Developer to lead end-to-end data modeling, visualization, and analytics solutions across Microsoft Fabric/Azure Analytics. You will own complex semantic models, optimize DAX, engineer performant T-SQL data marts, and establish Power BI governance and best practices. This role partners closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable, scalable, and insightful BI products that drive decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Design, build, and maintain enterprise-grade Power BI datasets, semantic models, and reports using star/snowflake schemas and robust DAX patterns.
β’ Utilize performant T-SQL data pipelines, views, and stored procedures for curated data marts and dimensional models (SCD handling, surrogate keys, conformed dimensions).
β’ Leverage Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Lakehouse, Data Warehouse) and Azure Analytics services (Synapse, Data Factory/Azure Data Factory, Databricks) to orchestrate data ingestion, transformation, and governance.
β’ Implement row-level and object-level security (RLS/OLS), certified datasets, and workspace governance aligned to data security and compliance standards.
β’ Own performance optimization: measure and tune DAX queries, model relationships, aggregations, incremental refresh, and DirectQuery/Composite models.
β’ Utilize standards and CI/CD practices for BI assets (e.g., deployment pipelines, parameterization, versioning) β preferably via Azure DevOps/Git integration.
β’ Collaborate with stakeholders to elicit requirements, define success metrics, and deliver clear, actionable insights; present findings to executive and non-technical audiences.
β’ Document data lineage, semantic definitions, and KPIs; maintain a robust data catalog and usage guidelines.
β’ Support production operations: monitor refreshes, troubleshoot model/report issues, and drive continuous improvement across the BI estate.
Required Qualifications
β’ Expert-level Power BI, including DAX (calculated columns/measures), Tabular modeling, relationships, hierarchies, calculation groups, and advanced filtering techniques.
β’ Strong data warehousing with Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL: dimensional modeling, performance tuning, indexing strategies, and ETL/ELT patterns.
β’ Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric and/or Azure Analytics (Synapse, Data Factory/Azure Data Factory, Databricks) for scalable data engineering.
β’ Proven rigor and thoroughness: disciplined testing, validation, and documentation; ability to enforce standards and maintain data quality.
β’ Fluent communicator: able to translate business needs into technical designs and explain complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
β’ 7+ years in BI/Analytics engineering with a track record of delivering enterprise BI solutions at scale.
Preferred Qualifications
β’ Experience with Azure DevOps/Git for source control, branching strategies, and CI/CD of BI assets (deployment pipelines, YAML).
β’ Exposure to Salesforce data models and/or Customer Data Analytics (CDP) for integrating CRM metrics and customer 360 analytics.
β’ Power BI Administration (tenant settings, capacity management, monitoring, usage analytics).
β’ Performance tuning with aggregation tables, composite models, calculation groups, and query caching.
β’ Data governance, cataloging, and metadata management using Purview or similar tools.
β’ Bachelorβs/Masterβs in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Core Competencies
Competency What Good Looks Like
β’ Fluent Communicator Produces concise artifacts, clearly articulates trade-offs, tailors messaging to executives and practitioners, facilitates decision-making.
β’ High Rigor Applies disciplined testing/validation, peer reviews, reproducible pipelines, and auditability; adheres to standards and enforces governance.
β’ Thoroughness Consider lineage/definitions and edge cases; anticipates downstream impacts; closes gaps before production.
Tools & Technologies
β’ Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, Tabular Editor (optional), DAX Studio
β’ Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, Fabric Data Warehouse/Lakehouse, OneLake
β’ Familiar with: Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory (or Microsoft Fabric pipelines), Databricks
β’ Azure DevOps/Git, Deployment Pipelines, CI/CD
β’ Purview/Lineage, Monitoring/Usage Analytics
β’ Utilize CI/CD for BI assets with automated validation and rollback; <1% failed deployments per quarter.
