Role description
Job Title: Senior Data Engineer (Production Support)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Length: 6–12 months (with scope to extend)
Work Location: Hybrid - 2 days per week on-site in West Midlands
We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support a large-scale Financial Data Reporting function within an enterprise environment. This role is focused on maintaining stability, reliability and performance across production ETL pipelines and cloud data warehouse platforms.
This is a hands-on position suited to a strong production-focused engineer who can troubleshoot complex data issues, implement long-term fixes and ensure high levels of data quality and availability across business-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
• Monitor and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines, batch jobs and warehouse data loads
• Investigate and resolve production incidents, job failures and performance bottlenecks
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term corrective actions
• Validate data quality including row counts, duplicates, schema changes and integrity checks
• Ensure SLAs are met across scheduled and real-time data workloads
• Manage incidents and change processes using ServiceNow, Jira or similar tooling
• Implement monitoring, logging and alerting solutions for proactive issue detection
• Fine-tune SQL queries and ETL workflows to improve performance and efficiency
• Optimise load plans and enhance production reliability
• Maintain runbooks, support documentation and operational procedures
• Support go-live activities and initial data loads during deployments
• Ensure compliance with data security, access control and audit requirements
• Collaborate closely with Data Platform teams and development teams on fixes and releases
• Support business users with data-related queries and reporting issues
• Participate in operational review meetings and status reporting
Required Skills and Experience
• Over 6 years’ experience in data engineering within production support environments
• Strong hands-on ETL/ELT expertise using tools such as Matillion, Informatica, ODI or SSIS
• Experience working with Snowflake or similar cloud-based data warehouse platforms
• Advanced SQL programming and debugging skills across relational and cloud databases
• Proven experience troubleshooting production failures and performing root cause analysis
• Experience working within ITIL-based environments (incident, problem and change management)
• Strong understanding of data quality validation and warehouse best practices
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders
Desirable
• Experience working with finance or financial reporting data
• Exposure to SAP systems and databases
• Knowledge of Power BI or Tableau
• Experience with Kimball or Inmon data modelling approaches
