Role description
Senior Data Engineer (BigQuery / Looker)
📍 London- Remote working but occasional on site presence needed
💰 Up to £525 per day | Outside IR35
📅 Initial 3-month contract with strong extension potential
I'm currently partnering with a leading retail organisation that is looking to bring in an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support a key data transformation programme.
The business is modernising its retail planning and reporting capabilities, replacing manual Excel-based processes with a scalable, self-service reporting solution built on Google Cloud.
This is a hands-on role where you'll play a key part in designing and delivering data pipelines, data models, and semantic layers that enable better reporting and business decision-making.
What you'll be doing
• Build and maintain robust data pipelines within Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Develop and optimise data models in BigQuery
• Design and maintain Dataform pipelines across raw, staging, and curated (gold) data layers
• Integrate multiple data sources including POS, inventory, shipping, forecasting, pricing, EDI, and portal data
• Create scalable semantic models for consumption within Looker
• Implement business logic including:
• Weeks of Supply calculations
• Inventory forecasting
• On-hand vs On-order inventory
• Calendar and retail reporting alignment
• Ensure data quality, reconciliation, and performance across the reporting platform
• Work closely with BI, commercial, and business stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into scalable data solutions
Required Skills
• Strong commercial experience with BigQuery (essential)
• Excellent SQL and data modelling skills
• Experience building data pipelines within GCP
• Hands-on experience with Dataform
• Experience developing data models for reporting and analytics
• Strong understanding of data warehousing best practices
Nice to Have
• Experience with Looker and semantic modelling
• Retail, FMCG, or supply chain data experience
• Experience delivering self-service BI solutions
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-known retail business on a high-impact programme. Most of the source data already exists, with the focus on enhancing datasets, implementing forecasting and inventory logic, and enabling modern self-service reporting through Looker.
If you're an experienced Data Engineer with strong BigQuery expertise and you're looking for your next Outside IR35 contract, I'd be keen to speak with you.
