Location: Hybrid (2 days/week in Edinburgh)
Contract Length: October 2025 – March 2026
Day Rate: £400-500 (experience dependent)
IR35: Outside IR35 (pending final determination)
The Project
The University of Edinburgh’s Data Lab is leading a government-funded AI adoption programme, supporting 30–40 manufacturing SMEs to harness AI for real-world impact.
We’re seeking a Senior Data Scientist Consultant to join the delivery team and help manufacturers adopt and embed AI solutions.
You’ll work closely with business leaders and technical teams to understand their challenges, shape solutions, and deliver actionable insights before the March 2026 deadline.
What You’ll Be Doing
● Lead data science delivery across multiple SME projects in the manufacturing sector.
● Wrangle and structure data, building dashboards and analytics solutions (QuickSight,
Power BI preferred).
● Work with streaming and IoT data (MQTT, cloud ingestion, schema management).
● Build and optimise ETL pipelines on AWS cloud platforms.
● Apply manufacturing domain expertise (machine energy usage, air quality
monitoring, forecasting).
● Translate complex technical outputs into clear business insights for non-technical
stakeholders.
● Gather requirements, scope solutions, and ensure timely delivery.
Who We’re Looking For
● Proven experience as a senior-level Data Scientist or Consultant.
● Ability to deliver rapid prototypes in 2–5 day engagements with SMEs, since that’s the mode of delivery
● Excellent customer-facing and stakeholder management skills.
● Strong knowledge of data engineering and applied machine learning.
● Skilled in dashboards, data wrangling, and cloud platforms (AWS essential).
● Understanding of manufacturing data contexts (IoT, predictive maintenance, energy
optimisation).
● Experience working in hybrid, cross-functional teams.
● Self-starter comfortable working independently under university T&Cs.
The Team
You’ll be part of a small but skilled delivery team including:
● (Programme Lead)
● A part-time Data Analyst
● An internal Data Scientist (part-time)
● An Infrastructure Engineer (cloud setup)
Why Join:
This is a unique opportunity to:
● Drive real-world AI adoption in the manufacturing sector.
● Work with SMEs on impactful projects backed by government funding.
● Operate with flexibility in a hybrid setup while engaging with industry leaders.
