Role description
Orange County, CA (Hybrid – Limited Onsite as Needed)
Compensation: $60 - $75 per hour (maybe negotiable based on experience)
Engagement Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Backend Architecture Consultant to support the design and delivery of enterprise-scale, cloud-native systems on AWS. This is an independent, project-based consulting engagement (1099) suited for a senior-level professional providing architectural deliverables and technical advisory support.
This role is structured around defined outcomes and milestones, rather than an embedded full-time staff position.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide architecture leadership for Java backend systems, microservices, APIs, and event-driven platforms
• Define technical architecture blueprints, integration patterns, and solution recommendations
• Design and optimize AWS-native architectures leveraging services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, IAM, KMS, CloudWatch, and WAF
• Conduct security design reviews, threat modeling, and risk mitigation planning
• Partner with engineering and DevOps stakeholders to support implementation success
• Develop clear technical documentation, diagrams, and architecture standards
Required Expertise
• 10+ years of experience with Java, Spring Boot, and enterprise backend systems
• 5+ years of experience architecting solutions on AWS
• Strong knowledge of microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven design
• Deep understanding of security best practices (OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, encryption, IAM governance)
• Experience with CI/CD, containers (Docker), Kubernetes, and IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation)
• Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis)
Preferred Qualifications
• AWS Professional Certifications (Solutions Architect Pro, DevOps Engineer)
• Experience in regulated or compliance-driven environments (SOC2, ISO, NIST, PCI, etc.)
• Familiarity with Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming platforms
Engagement Structure (1099 Compliance)
• Independent Consultant (1099) engagement
• Project-based scope with autonomy over execution and scheduling
• Occasional onsite sessions in Orange County for architecture workshops or stakeholder reviews
• Consultant must maintain an independently established practice and provide services in an advisory/deliverables capacity
Nondiscrimination Statement
MOGEL RPO LLC is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and considers all qualified individuals for consulting opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
Please note: because this is a 1099 independent consulting engagement rather than an employment position, traditional EEOC employment language does not directly apply; however, we remain committed to fair, inclusive, and non-discriminatory practices in all contractor and consulting relationships.
To Apply
Please submit your resume, availability, and a brief summary of recent Java/AWS architecture consulting engagements.
