Title: Senior Kotlin Engineer Location: Minneapolis, MN Job Type: W-2 Contract (6 Months) Compensation: $60.15 - $71.42/hr W2 Industry: Retail Required Technologies: Kotlin, Java / J2EE, Spring Boot, REST APIs Kafka About The Role Our client, a leading national retail corporation with a fast-growing retail media and digital advertising division, is seeking a Senior Kotlin Engineer to help lead the design and evolution of its high-performance, large-scale ad tech platforms. This organization operates one of the most recognized retail brands in the country and is investing heavily in the technology that powers its digital advertising ecosystem. As a Senior Kotlin Engineer, you will bring deep technical expertise to architect resilient distributed systems, evaluate emerging technologies, and drive engineering excellence across the full software development lifecycle. This role is highly hands-on and requires strong production development experience in Kotlin and modern backend technologies. Job Description This role plays a pivotal role in building and scaling the backend systems that power digital advertising platforms. Working alongside talented, cross-functional teams, you will architect resilient distributed systems, mentor fellow engineers, and champion engineering best practices from design through deployment. This is an opportunity to solve complex, high-impact technical challenges while shaping the reliability, performance, and long-term direction of a rapidly evolving ad tech environment. In This Role, You Will • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services using Kotlin and modern microservices architecture. • Apply expertise in current and emerging technologies to solve complex engineering challenges. • Evaluate new technologies through proof of concepts, considering scalability, maintainability, performance, and total cost of ownership. • Lead technical design discussions, architecture reviews, code reviews, testing, and debugging activities. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement robust system architectures using system diagrams and process flows. • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across projects. • Drive system reliability, resiliency, and disaster recovery planning. • Implement and champion data quality standards across data ingestion, processing, storage, and operational workflows. • Promote engineering best practices, automation, and continuous improvement throughout the development lifecycle. Qualifications Required Qualifications: • Strong hands-on experience developing production applications in Kotlin. • Solid experience with Java/J2EE and RESTful API development. • Experience building and deploying microservices using Spring Boot. • Experience with messaging and event streaming platforms such as Kafka. • Experience with one or more databases such as Cassandra, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or Elasticsearch. • Experience working within monorepo-based development environments. • Strong knowledge of distributed systems and scalable backend architecture. • Proficiency with testing frameworks, including JUnit and Mockito, and experience writing integration tests. • Experience using observability and monitoring tools such as Logstash, Elasticsearch, Kibana, and Grafana. • Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment processes. • Excellent communication, collaboration, and technical presentation skills. Preferred Qualifications: • Experience working within AdTech ecosystems, including DSPs, SSPs, or Ad Servers. • Experience with Python development. • Knowledge of workflow orchestration or data pipeline tools such as Oozie. • Experience designing technical solutions that align with digital advertising and business objectives.
