Role description
Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Modeler & Data Analyst for our client in Richmond, VA. You will play a key role in advancing regional planning through the development of analytical models and robust data pipelines. Working closely with the Principal Data Manager, you'll lead efforts in updating the region’s travel demand model, conducting scenario analyses, and developing multimodal and equity-focused performance metrics. This role also supports cross-disciplinary teams—including environmental planning, housing, and community development—by transforming complex data into actionable insights for local governments and regional partners.
Primary Responsibilities Regional Data Pipelines & Analysis
• Design and maintain scalable, reusable data pipelines across the full data lifecycle:
• Acquisition: Gather data from APIs, Census, GTFS feeds, and regional sources.
• Tidying & Integration: Clean, standardize, and integrate datasets (transportation, land use, housing, demographics, economy).
• Analysis & Modeling: Apply statistical and geospatial methods to support regional planning.
• Visualization & Reporting: Create clear, accessible maps, dashboards, and summaries.
• Automation: Streamline workflows for regular updates and reproducibility.
• Utilize Python or R for data analysis, modeling, and automation.
• Proficient in GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro/Online, GeoPandas) for high-quality spatial analysis and cartography.
• Develop and manage indicator dashboards and performance metrics to support planning and decision-making.
Travel Demand Modeling
• Apply traditional four-step models and understand activity-based modeling approaches.
• Hands-on experience with tools such as TransCAD, Cube, or ActivitySim for model calibration, validation, and scenario analysis.
• Integrate travel survey data, network data, and socioeconomic forecasts into modeling workflows.
• Support long-range planning, corridor studies, and project prioritization using modeling outputs.
Transportation Performance Measurement
• Track and report transportation performance metrics in line with FHWA and FTA requirements.
• Incorporate equity-focused indicators and demographic data into transportation performance reporting.
Preferred / Bonus Skills
• Familiarity with land use forecasting, scenario planning tools, or parcel-level modeling.
• Experience with microsimulation or activity-based models for corridor studies.
• Understanding of MPO/regional planning processes (e.g., LRTP, TIP, CEDS).
• Experience with public engagement tools (e.g., ArcGIS StoryMaps, Social Pinpoint).
• Comfortable working with open data platforms and supporting open-source software adoption.
What You’ll Bring Core Competencies
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple long-term projects and conduct literature and qualitative research.
• Advanced skills in statistical analysis, survey methods, and data synthesis.
• Experience with data visualization platforms such as GIS, Tableau, or similar tools.
• Proficient in developing and maintaining complex data pipelines in Python or R.
• Solid understanding of transportation planning and spatial analysis.
• Familiarity with travel demand modeling software and methodologies.
Required Education & Experience
• Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Administration, or a related field.
• Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of progressive relevant experience may also be considered.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Data Analyst or similar role in a related field.
