Job Purpose and Background:
As the Services Senior Data Associate at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), you will be a key driver in ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of customer and target data as it moves through our validation services to the public-facing SBTi Target Dashboard. Working with a high degree of independence, you will identify data anomalies before they become issues, implement quality assurance protocols, and contribute to solutions to improve our data ecosystem.
Daily, you can expect to conduct rigorous data audits, triage and resolve data-related issues, and refine the internal workflows that support our weekly publishing pipeline, ensuring data reliability for Services operations and reporting. Additionally, you will maintain critical documentation like data dictionaries and collaborate closely with Product and Technology colleagues to identify and resolve more complex issues. You will also complete special projects as needed to support Services colleagues with advanced analytics and reporting.
This position will report to the Senior Manager, Services Dashboard and Data within the Target Operations Team, based in the United States.
This role plays an important part in achieving:
Improved overall data quality and consistency for SBTi Services. By maintaining accurate and reliable data, you enable SBTi's internal teams to make informed decisions and operate at scale, and ensure that the SBTi Target Dashboard remains a trusted, high-quality resource for global stakeholders tracking corporate climate action.
You are a great fit for this role if you:
You possess strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced remote environment. You are a versatile communicator who can provide clear technical requirements for Product and Technology teams one day and translate data into actionable insights for business stakeholders the next. You have experience working in cross-functional teams maintaining large, complex datasets, and advanced data auditing, analysis and visualization skills.
About the SBTi:
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies worldwide to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companiesβ targets.
For more information, please visit www.sciencebasedtargets.org
Key Responsibilities:
β’ Build on established standards to implement rigorous processes, controls, and audits to improve overall data quality and consistency for SBTi Services.
β’ Drive recurring Quality Assurance procedures for the Target Dashboard and core operational data, utilizing automated workflows and "human-in-the-loop" monitoring to surface data issues early and enable rapid remediation.
β’ Partner with operations and technology colleagues to automate repetitive data tasks to optimize the weekly publishing pipeline.
β’ Maintain critical documentation, including data dictionaries and process manuals.
β’ Investigate and resolve data issues in partnership with Product, Engineering, and subject matter experts in Services; perform or delegate related clean-up tasks to relevant colleagues.
β’ Support the triaging of internal and external data-related requests and queries.
β’ Participate in Agile ceremonies and cross-functional teams to contribute to the management and improvement of the wider organization data ecosystem.
β’ Build dashboards and automations to support KPI tracking and data monitoring.
Experience and Skills:
β’ Currently eligible to work in Mexico or the UK with 3+ years of experience in data operations, quality assurance, analytics or similar.
β’ Strong SQL proficiency and an understanding of database technologies and data pipelines (e.g., PostgreSQL, BigQuery).
β’ Expertise in managing complex datasets in Google Sheets or Excel.
β’ Ability to design "Self-Service" data tools in Looker Studio or similar BI platforms.
β’ Experience automating repetitive data tasks/creating datasets from unstructured or βmessyβ data (e.g. Python, Google Apps Script).
β’ Proactive mindset for data auditing and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), able to identify and support resolution of 'upstream' data issues at the source.
β’ Experience maintaining technical documentation, such as data dictionaries and process manuals, to ensure team-wide alignment and data integrity.
β’ Experience navigating CRM platforms (e.g., Freshsales) and managing the flow of data between front-end systems and reporting environments.
β’ Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical data issues into requirements for Engineers or insights for business teams.
β’ Comfortable in a remote, multicultural environment with the flexibility to work across global time zones.
Desirable criteria:
β’ Analytics Engineering experience, including familiarity with transformation tools like dbt to manage raw BigQuery data.
β’ Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git/GitHub) to manage scripts and collaborate effectively with Product and Engineering teams.
β’ Understanding of ETL/ELT processes and integration tools (e.g., Fivetran, Airbyte).
β’ Professional interest in climate science or sustainability initiatives and/or experience in mission-driven/nonprofit sectors.
β’ Knowledge of data privacy and governance standards and frameworks (e.g., GDPR).
β’ Familiarity with Agile development and related project management tools like Jira.
β’ Exposure to broader Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services for more complex data handling.
β’ Experience communicating with external product and data users/customers
