Halvik is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with Visual FoxPro expertise to join our technical team supporting one of the DOT's regulatory agencies in sustaining and modernizing their core systems. It is a key role responsible for sustaining and modernizing legacy Visual FoxPro (VFP) applications and databases while participating in the engineering effort to migrate remaining VFP capabilities into the modern application stack. This position supports both Operations and Maintenance (O&M) and Development, Modernization, and Enhancement (DME) work using Agile practices. Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Visual FoxPro sustainment and modernization leadership • Provide senior-level engineering support for VFP applications, including troubleshooting, defect resolution, enhancements, refactoring, and stabilization in production and non-production environments. • Lead technical execution to migrate remaining VFP applications and related web framework into the modern application stack to enable full VFP retirement. • Database migration and modernization to AWS • Plan and implement migration of all Visual FoxPro databases to Amazon RDS or another AWS offering, including schema conversion, data validation, performance tuning, and cutover planning. • Provide continuous monitoring and operational support for backend database environments (VFP, Postgres, and Amazon RDS) • Integration and data exchange enablement • Maintain and update the application's Universal Datafeed (UDF) so data can be consumed by other applications and support efforts to reduce manual export processes in collaboration with customer stakeholders. • Design and implement reliable interfaces between legacy and modernized components during phased migration, ensuring continuity of mission workflows and data integrity. • Maintain application code in GitHub repositories • Ensure security requirements are met, including encryption of data at rest and in transit and support for enterprise authentication practices as directed. • Provide after-hours emergency response support when required, including support aligned to field operations and varying time zones. • Recommend and implement targeted code and design improvements to improve application stability and performance during peak usage periods. • Develop and maintain technical documentation supporting O&M and modernization, including configuration management, data migration procedures, source control usage, build scripts, deployment procedures, and architecture diagrams. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other related scientific or technical discipline. • 10 years of experience, including 7 years specialized in software engineering for enterprise systems (with demonstrated depth in established technologies, including legacy modernization). • Demonstrated senior-level technical expertise delivering production-grade solutions and leading complex modernization efforts, including legacy system migration and interface/API refactoring. Required Technical Skills • Expert-level experience with Microsoft Visual FoxPro (VFP) development, sustainment, and debugging in production environments. • Proven ability to plan and execute migrations that retire legacy platforms, including rebuilding legacy APIs and refactoring dependencies. • Strong working knowledge of DevSecOps engineering processes and Agile methodology, including experience with JIRA and GitHub.
